Man cannot serve two masters
The mighty eagle snatched the fish out of the river, clutching it tightly in its powerful talons. Spreading his broad wings he flew home where his family was waiting patiently for dinner. Mr. Feathers knew his family depended on him to provide but he tired of hunting all the time. He often thought how wonderful it would be to rest for a few days. However, knowing family comes first and it was his responsibility to provide the food he continuously hunted every day.
Perched above his nest, Mr. Feather gave the fish to his wife so she could feed their young. The young, becoming larger everyday quickly gobbled the fish. The baby eagles still hungry, chirped incessantly at their mother after finishing the meal. Mrs. Feathers turned to her tired husband, "Darling, the kids are still hungry. You are a good provider but we still need more food."
Staring at her in disbelief, Mr. Feathers murmured, "I just got home." Then looking at his hungry babies he said in a determined voice, "I will fly off bringing back another meal."
Soaring above the forest, Mr. Feathers quickly noticed a slight movement in the meadow a mile away. Diving toward the meadow he saw a small brown rabbit eating clover. With lightning speed he snatched up the rabbit carrying it back to his nest.
The rabbit, trapped by the sharp talons of the eagle spoke quickly, "Mr. Eagle, powerful hunter, you must get tired of catching small meals like me."
"Yes, little rabbit, my wife complained that the last meal I brought in was too small. I had to leave the nest immediately after bringing in the meal to find more food. My family is getting bigger."
"There's a better way. If you will let me, I'll show you how to get two meals at once. However, you must spare my life."
"Very well, " answered the eagle. "I would like to feed my family and rest."
Once settled in the grass, the rabbit spoke, "Mr. Eagle, mighty hunter, you can get two meals by finding two prey at once. Focus on one, then immediately catch the second. Then you will have a meal in each talon."
As the eagle blinked in thought, the rabbit scurried between two large boulders to safety.
Circling the forest again the eagle thought about the words of the rabbit, "Two meals at a time." Spotting movement along the riverbank and in the river, Mr. Feathers closed in on a fat raccoon turning rocks along the riverbank and a shiny fish in the river. Striking ferociously, Mr. Eagle splashed water everywhere grasping the large fish in its talons. Turning to shore he zeroed in on the raccoon. Screeching triumphantly, the powerful eagle stretched out his talons to take the raccoon but when he opened his talons he dropped the fish instead. Faltering in mid flight the eagle hesitated trying to pick up the fish. The fish flopped back into the river disappearing into the depths of the river. The raccoon with an extra second bolted into the dense forest hiding under a fallen log.
Ascending into the blue sky the eagle clearly thought, "Stay focused on one prey at a time or I will lose both."
The eagle, a powerful hunter, capable of catching almost anything, is a creature of God. Man is also a powerful hunter made in the image of God. Man can chose to focus on his goals and what he wants in life. When we try to focus on two things at once we will lose both. If we try to lead a sinful life while trying to please God we will lose our relationship to God and our desire for sin. In Matthew 6:24, the Bible states, "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money." If we stay focused on God we will save our own lives bringing joy and peace to others around us. If we focus on sin we will lose our relationship with God. If we focus on God while sinning then we have lost God's blessings and hurt the people around us.
