Friday morning, the last day of bible school, I am awakened by the smell of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. I climb out of bed and can feel the heat of this hot July morning. I get dressed and run down stairs to see my mom putting the last batch of chocolate chip cookies into the oven. Now remember this was back in the day when Moms had time to actually bake cookies instead of traveling an hour to pick a package up at the local “shop till you drop, walk seventeen aisles just to get cat food.” Super market.
“Mom,” I ask, “Can I walk to Bible school by myself this morning?”
“You don’t want to be seen walking with your mom and sister,” Mom asks with a surprised look on her face?
“No mom it isn’t that, I am eight years old now and I think I can walk the half a block to church by myself,” I reply.
“Well,” Mom says, “I guess we can try this today.”
I was so excited I was going to show my friends Danny and Brian that I wasn’t a momma’s boy after all!
“Well Mom it is 8:40 I am going to start to Bible school,” I yell to my Mom. “Wait,” Mom yells, “Would you please carry the cookies to Bible school for me today?”
Wow, I think to myself. I just am not walking the half block to church by myself for the first time; Mom trusts me with her chocolate chip cookies.
“Sure,” I yell and run into the kitchen and grab the tray of chocolate chip cookies that Mom had gotten up at the crack of dawn to bake for our Bible school closing.
I walk down our long backyard and reach the alley that would take me to the side entrance of our church. Here I am walking to Bible school like all the other “Big” kids. Carrying three-dozen chocolate chip cookies that I have been entrusted with. I think to myself: why go in the side door when I could walk around to the front of the church and climb the sixteen steps that would take me straight into the sanctuary. What a wonderful idea. I walked around the side of the church, for all my friends to see, and climbed those sixteen steps and entered the giant wooden doors that graced the entrance.
I did it, I thought, all by myself; I knew Mom and Dad would be proud of me. As I entered the sanctuary the preacher was standing there greeting the children and the helpers as they made their way into the church.
“Good morning Robert,” the preacher said.
“Good morning,” I replied.
“Well look at that,” he said, “some of your Mom’s chocolate chip cookies, let me take those and get those to the kitchen staff.”
He reached for the try and I started down the aisle and made it to my pew with my other classmates. As I sat down I turned around and was talking to Danny and telling him how I walked to Bible school by myself and how he walked with his Mom and three sisters. That is when I saw it happen; as I was looking to the back of the sanctuary, I saw the preacher reach into the tray of cookies that I had just given him and pull one out. As I continued to watch I saw him put the cookie to his mouth. Just then Mrs. Ronim walked in and caught him taking a big bite. He smiled at her and they were talking but I couldn’t hear what they were saying. I knew Mrs. Ronim and she was probably scolding him for stealing a cookie. Much to my surprise Mrs. Romin offered him a cupcake from her plate and he accepted. What a job this guy has I think to myself. He works only on Sunday and at Bible school he is treated to all the cookies and cupcakes he can handle. How do you get a job like this? I know when Dad comes home from the machine shop he is tired. If I could someday become a preacher I could work only one day a week and get all the cookies and cupcakes I could eat. Unfortunately, I grew up and found it isn’t as easy as all the cupcakes and cookies you can eat in your one day workweek

This would improve by leaps and bounds with a more careful edit for grammar and mechanical errors. It's a story with a lot of promise, and I liked the ending a lot. I strongly encourage you to give it another go-round.
