Suddenly it begins with just a few staccato like notes. Then a moment of silence before it resumes. The volume and rhythm rise and fall. I listen a bit and determine that without action from me it will be a very long concert. I roll over so it will shake the bed a bit, hoping that will be enough movement to bring silence. That doesn’t work, so my next move is to grab my husband’s shoulder and shake it.
”You’re snoring!” He wakes up and apologizes.
“I love you,” he says and promptly goes back to sleep.
Snoring, most people would say, is definitely not music. True, it does not qualify from the dictionary definition. However, to me it is the music of love. No matter how awful it may sound and how quickly I decide to end it, it sings out security and closeness as we lay side by side. I know he loves me as deeply as I love him. God has blessed me with a loving, godly husband and a good marriage. Silence has returned and my eyes are heavy. If there are more snoring songs, my ears will not hear them. I am asleep.
As I head for the door the next morning, I call goodbye to our cat. “I’ll be back soon.”
If he hears, he doesn’t care. He has given us an hour of his time this morning and now is curled up in one of his favorite napping spots. When I return he doesn’t come to greet me. I have to find him, and when I do he just looks at me with half open eyes and yawns. I call him to come. He is not a lap cat so he perches where I am sitting. I begin petting him, his head butts against my hand and he begins to purr. It is a squeaky purr, akin to the sound of a porch swing moving back and forth. This goes on for several minutes until he has had enough. There is no melody to the purring, but it is his music of love to one who cares for him.
My thoughts drift to nature’s music: singing birds, chirping crickets, falling rain, whispering wind and rolling thunder. I love listening to the sound of a rippling brook, ocean waves or a cascading waterfall. So much music of love composed and orchestrated by a loving God singing out praise to His creativity, His power and His love for all He has created.
Has there ever been any sweeter music of love than that sung to the shepherds by the host of angels the night Jesus was born? Has there been a greater symphony written and performed than the one celebrating the resurrection of our living Lord? Will there ever be as great a choir singing as the one from every kindred, tribe and people group that will someday be singing music of love before the heavenly throne throughout eternity?
Oh, my heart, now sing out in return my music of love to God.
“I love you, Lord
And I lift my voice
To worship You
Oh, my soul rejoice!
Take joy my King
In what You hear
Let it be a sweet, sweet sound in Your ear.”
