It is said, “Music soothes the savage soul.”
Martin was a boy raised by wolves. We found him in Yellowstone National Park. It was a cold dreary morning with steam from the hot springs looping around the tall trunks of the evergreens that lined the walkways built for tourists tightening its coils as if to choke the life from the tall majestic pines. Or he found us, I’m not sure which.
It seems, after much research, that Martin was adopted by the wolves as a two month old child whose parents were killed when the vibration of the engine of their snowmobile caused an avalanche on a precipice that dropped them 50 feet to their end beneath six feet of snow. Martin’s parents served as a food cache for the pack while Martin was taken into the den and adopted by the alpha female who had six young pups. Martin’s parents did not expect an avalanche, of course, and thought only of the short ride across a ridge for a picnic.
His life with the wolves prepared Martin for a life of challenge. As a baby he had to fight his canine siblings for his mother’s teat or starve. Later he found he must be strong and quick to fight for his share of the kill and even later it was necessary for him to run very fast and leap upon an antelope and tear its throat with his teeth so the pack could eat. He had to be very quick witted and ferocious with the willingness to act immediately when needed. In other words, he had a hunter’s nature.
Martin exhibited that same ferociousness and quick wit when he was taught by the tutors that we brought in to help in his education. We began with the basic skills of personal hygiene and personal interaction. Martin had the most difficulty with understanding that we would not steal his food if he did not guard it with teeth and nail. Playing music on a portable CD player with earphones was the only way we could find to get Martin to calm down while food was present. Martin’s favorite song was “Sanctuary” by Marty Goetz. But Martin attacked his studies with the same energy with which he guarded his food and he excelled in math and science with a particular interest in physics. He became a pilot and served in the Air Force to become the youngest ace ever awarded that honor during the South African Conflict and Mid-East War. His favorite poem was “High Flight” written in 1941 by Pilot Officer Gillespie Magee of the RCAF. Martin would often repeat the poem while in the cockpit of his fighter jet. He also became a Christian and could quote scripture and could expound upon the themes of the Bible with the ease and authority of a seasoned minister.
We are very proud of our “wolf-boy” and can’t wait to see him again. You see he left us nine months ago on a long journey and must stay there three months before he is able to take the nine months to come back home. Today, our young Martin became the first human being to step onto the surface of another planet, Mars. As he took his first step upon the dusty heat of that Mars desert Martin hummed a line from “Sanctuary” and breathed a prayer, “I reached out my hand and touched to face of God.”
