His dad promised him that one day, if he gets any better, they will go fishing together. “It’ll be one of the best days of my life,” he would say.
Bryan’s dad was very sick.
He wasn’t like most sons are, either. Now, at 15 years old, Bryan would wake up every morning to make sure his dad was okay. That nothing happened while he was asleep. He would, very reluctantly, go to school every morning. He didn’t participate in any extra-curricular activities because he’d have to stay after school. Bryan’s dad knew how lucky he was to have such a loyal son.
Bryan’s mom left him and his dad alone.
His mother never really cared about her family. You could probably call her a “gold-digger.” Even though that wasn’t all she looked for, income was very high on her list of priorities. When Bryan’s dad started getting sick, he had to give up his job. Of course, his mom wasn’t going to live with being the only person bringing in money for whole family, so she left him for a younger, richer, more healthy man, leaving Bryan and his dad with very little.
Bryan’s dad had little to live for.
Every afternoon, when Bryan gets home from school, his dad makes sure to tell him, “You’re the only reason I’m still here, son. Thank you.” His dad never had anybody else visiting him. His dad was always alone. His dad only had him, that’s all.
Bryan only left his father for one other thing.
Every Sunday, Bryan went to church. Though very few of them knew about his father being sick, he did have a few people who did know. “Know we’re praying for you and your father, Bryan.” “We all love you.” “You can stay with us if you ever need it, okay?”
Bryan’s dad died last week.
He knew it would happen sooner or later. He hoped that his dad was in the same place that he planned on going to when he left, but he wasn’t completely sure. He never made sure his dad was a Christian, and he never said very much about church. All he could really hope for were the prayers from his fellow church members and himself. He knew there was a possibility, and he hoped it would be okay.
Bryan always wanted to learn how to fish.
A few days before Bryan’s dad died, he called his brother. “Be sure to take him fishing. I was going to, but I don’t think I’ll have the chance.” He told his brother, trying to choke back the tears.
Bryan loves his father.
Bryan will miss his father.
Every other week, Bryan goes fishing. Sometimes with his uncle, sometimes with his friends, sometimes on his own. But, he makes sure he goes every time. Even though his dad isn't there to fish with him, he likes to think the his father is there, watching him.
