The volunteer ministries of Chalice and similar groups contributed greatly to exciting times. The Holy Spirit started to show people that they could have a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ. New churches were formed bearing the common word “fellowship” in their name. The camaraderie of God’s love among believers was contagious to those seeking the Lord.
One particular appearance of Chalice stands out above all others. They were to minister on a Sunday morning but arrived on a Friday evening. So, the entire Church called an impromptu gathering to welcome the group. It was fascinating to hear how the Lord brought musicians and singers of various talents to perform as a group.
One young couple in Chalice were newly married. Their testimony of how the Lord put them together helped the faith of all. Neither of them knew each other before becoming part of the musical ministry and never connected with each other in a romantic way. The intriguing thing about this was that the love between them was the envy of every couple. It was so priceless as to disarm the hardest of hearts. I personally expressed the desire to keep them with me so I could soak up the love that I observed between them.
The testimony of this young couple encouraged others to share how they got together. One couple, with a humorous spirit, shared that they met in a bar. The next morning they woke up and discovered they were married. Because of the redemptive power of the Lord, they could laugh at it along with those who listened.
Much has changed in Christian music. It has evolved from volunteer ministry into big business. Groups still tour but perform concerts either at big Mega Churches or Coliseums. Recipients must pay for tickets in advance. Many performers share their experiences in the Lord that are usually reported from an interview in a prominent Christian magazine, along with a plug for their latest CD.
I don’t feel that there is a conspiracy in these developments. The cruel realities of economics places heavy burdens on volunteer musical groups. The message of the Lord continues to carry the same anointing even in professionally created productions.
In light of these developments, how does one create intimate fellowship? There are millions of fellowship groups around the world. Volunteer musicians continue to minister in the anointing of God. He never changes but people must constantly change and discern his voice in all forms and sizes of ministry.
