This all started when our Pastor and a team of men visited the island and found the deplorable condition in which the people lived. He returned with a broken spirit and reminded the church of the number of blessings that we take for granted.
He became emotional as he described the way the people still cooked on three stones in this twenty-first century.
We (Barbara and I) decided to sparehead an effort to assist those destitute people. The planning and execution seemed to be a herculean task fit for twenty men.
But alas!, I had given my word and my word was my bond. Well my bond had effectively bound me and I had to make an effort.
Who should I call? What will I take? How will the items be accumulated? As these questions whirred around my aching head, my phone rang! Barbara's agitated voice on the other end asked, so when are we going to meet in order to organise the trip?"
Ha!! I retorted; Are we going on a trip?" Now the rubber had hit the road. I had to do something; anything to begin what was promising to be the most difficult thing that I had ever done.
Our plan was to take all the items needed for the inhabitants of the island who would have had a miserable Christmas if we didn't.
After composing myself, I invited Barbara to my apartment and we began to plan.
After an hour of intense debates and heated exchanges I was convinced that the plan was workable and that the mission was possible.
There is an old adage that says "to try and fail is better than to fail to try."
My friend Barbara and I said a prayer, grit our teeth and brainstormed. We came up with a plan of action which included solicitation of funds and other items from all the corporate citizens and even children at school.
In two weeks we had collected a trailer load of goods and were still recieving donations. The churches wanted to sponsor a second trailer and use the opportunity to distribute tracts and evangelize the people.
Three weeks after the panic attack we were on the island and were blessed by the look of gratitude on the people's faces as they received their goods. They even called us angels.
On our journey back home, my friend and I reflected on the fact that it only took a small effort on our part. We concluded that with God, all things are posssible. When we pray and do our best, God joins in and does the rest. He does exceedingly and abundantly above all we could ask think or even imagine! We leasrnede by experience that no good mission is impossible with God.
