THE TOP OF THE PIT
by Leah Garhovd
I can't figure out
if
I'm climbing up
another mountain
or
out of another pit.
The difference
lies not in where one finishes
but,
in what one learns.
The top of the pit
usually lies at the bottom
of the next mountain.
Both climbs
evoke an equal sense of accomplishment.
However,
sometimes I think
I am more grateful
to be
out-of-the-pit
than
on-the-top-of-the-peak.
Aren't you usually
on your hands and knees
crawling,
exhausted,
out of breath
and out of energy
either way?
I am.
