I was scared out of my mind. I thought for sure I was going to die that day. I wiped my hands on my jeans and took a few deep breaths. As I waited anxiously, I looked to my right and was surprised to see an elderly woman in line. She had to be pushing eighty. This tiny, wrinkled woman was standing tall and seemingly unafraid. She was smiling. It was crazy! I leaned over and gently touched her arm. “Aren’t you scared?” I asked.
“Are you kidding?” Her face lit up as she proudly said, “I’ve been on this ride four times this morning!” There was no trace of fear in her eyes. Young at heart was an understatement for this brave and energetic woman.
“Seriously? How can you be going on a death-defying roller coaster like this and not be shaking in your boots?” I showed her my hands. “Look at me. My hands are shaking, I’ve got a stomach ache, I’m sweating, and I’ve been praying for my life the last ten minutes.”
She laughed. “This ride is small potatoes. Plus, once you get to be my age you throw fear out the window. Life’s too short and I know where I’m going when it’s over. So, I say, let’s do this!”
When the ride was over, the woman ran up to me. “Didn’t you love it? So thrilling!” Her grin was as big as a kid in a candy shop. She was inspiring. I, on the other hand, will likely never ride a coaster again. But, her energy and fearlessness made me think about my life in the Lord.
Jesus came to bring me life abundant. His example tells me there is joy to be found in the living out of my faith by action and not only words. Life is too short to live it full of fear and inaction. The brave woman who knew where she was going gave me a new perspective on my Christianity. Every moment should be lived as unto the Lord with youthful enthusiasm. So I say, “Let’s do this!”
