Determinedly, she swam on. After propelling herself six feet in the air to jump up over another waterfall, the cool fresh water was refreshing. She had spent four years in the salty Pacific, and now she was traveling toward her place of birth. There she had an important job to do before succumbing to death. So she continued—35 or more miles per day. During the arduous year-long journey she lives off of her stored body fat.
Her life had begun in this very stream. When she was a few months old she began her trek to the Pacific Ocean. There she had traveled over a thousand miles, feeding and growing to a healthy twelve pounds. Now it was time to return. She has her own built in Global Positioning System. It is believed she uses the earth’s magnetic field as her compass.
She finally arrives where her life began, her energy ebbing away. She carefully lays three to five thousand eggs and then dies. Amazing!
You and I are on a journey as well. However, eternity has been set in our hearts. (Ecclesiastes 3:11). We long for eternal life after our journey is finished. God’s word assures us that “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) Unlike the salmon that dies when its life journey is done, we can live forever. “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life...” (John 3:36) NIV
I am a retired elementary school teacher, and want to lift Jesus and make Him known.
