Encouragement
My new grandbaby has been a joy and blessing in my life. After nine months she is crawling and going everywhere with speed. It is hard to believe that just a few weeks ago she couldn’t get her hands to work and would just rock in place. She would get so frustrated that she couldn’t get where she wanted and now she is going full speed. She is even starting to learn to climb on a toy, like her ride on car to reach other toys. All this in just the matter of weeks…
Soon she will begin to walk and I will get to see baby steps. As a matter of fact, I guess I will be able to teach her to take those baby steps since that is exactly what I am doing now in accordance to ministry and writing. Baby steps. God opens one small door or calls for one simple step of obedience and I follow through with a baby step. It seems like just yesterday that I was praying about the will of God for my life and wondering if there was anything out there besides teaching a ladies class at church.
Now don’t get me wrong; I loved teaching the class and planned to do it forever if that was what God wanted. In the deepest part of me, however, I knew there was something he wanted me to do beyond that and He had gifted me to write. To be gifted to write is like being gifted to sing or anything else. The writing is the easy part just like the singing is the easy part. The hard part is all the discipline and obedience that comes with the gift.
I wrote, edited and published a church newsletter for five years before any writing opportunities started showing up. In fact, I wanted to quit after three years and went to my Pastor at church and told him. He said he really hated to stop the newsletter and he would pray for God to raise someone up to take it; asking if I would keep on until he found someone. I knew I had my answer then; that God wasn’t finished with me yet.
“He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much.” Luke 16: 10 NKJV
So I kept being faithful in the small things the best I could and finally the opportunity came, in the form of a writing class. God had much training and preparation ahead and my baby steps were beginning. Like a real baby, sometimes I had days when I didn't want to walk or days when I fell at the first step. Some days I would want to run before I was really able and other days I would rather “play” in the floor and forget the hard work. But God is good and He waits and is patient and when I have stopped crying and whining and am ready, I find the door is still open and the obedient act still waiting to be carried out. So, my baby steps begin again, all the while learning and waiting for the day I can finally walk with confidence and then, finally run...
