Bread formed the main part of the average person’s diet for centuries. Bread is a great source of energy because it is rich in complex carbohydrates. Everyone can relate to bread it’s the rich man food, it’s the poor man’s food. It’s common food, but yet it is enjoy by people of all walks of life. Jesus calls himself the bread of life (John 6:48 I am that bread of life.) Jesus here calling Himself the Bread of life, indicates to us that like as the Bread is a source of food for the body, he is the source of food and life for the soul. In other words what he was saying is I’ve come to give life to all men of over all walks of life, rich, poor, or peasants.
Originally bread was broken or torn, it was never cut. Bread was use as an offering to God. It was use in the tabernacle and temple to symbolize the presence of God. Bread was also used to symbolize and enemy to be consumed (Numbers 14:9 Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us…)
The Bible talks about the Bread of affliction, the bread of adversity, the staff of bread, the bread of toil. Jesus said in teaching us how to pray, he said “give us this day our daily bread” David said, “I’ve been old, but I have never seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging Bread. Bread! We can all relate to this common food!
Sometimes our lives may seem like it’s going through a time of breaking, and we can’t really tell if God is with us to help. But at this point we have to remember that our live is in God’s hand; just like bread that was broken in Jesus’ hand to feed the multitude. Could it be that when we feel broken that this is the time God is using us to minister to someone in need? One experience good or bad as we my perceive it is never wasted in the eyes of God who holds our breath in His hands. Remember the bread becomes useful when it’s broken; and God is near to those that are broken.
