Short Stories
WhhhhOOOSSSSSHHHHhhhh…thunk.
“I'm hit...” Consciousness faded...
An unending meadow spread before him and he ran, free and untiring. It was redolent with every flowering plant he knew; crimson cyclamen, pink and gold hibiscus, multi-colored chrysanthemum, white lilies, purple heather, and red roses.
Seeking the words...
He came to an expanse of still water reflecting a radiant sky but with no sun beating down.
Still seeking...
How refreshing to lie in the green grass, beside...
Ahhh, yes...found them.
"He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters."
Foreign voices of the enemy pierced the unconscious vision. He was lifted roughly, and the meadow vanished.

A table was laid before him with bread and water. After the interrogation and the beating how could he be hungry? Yet it almost tasted like filet mignon and fine wine.
The remembered motion of a rocking chair lulled him, and he closed his eyes.
His grandfather's voice was reading from a book.
"The Lord is my shepherd."
"What's a shepherd Grampa?"
"A shepherd is someone who take's care of sheep. He makes sure they're safe and that they have enough to eat. Jesus is our Shepherd. He takes care of us."
“But we’re not sheep.”
“No but sheep stray and so do we. Remember the time you ran off from your Mom in the mall and got lost?”
“Was that Jesus who found me, the man wearing the uniform? Mom said he was a policeman.”
"I think Jesus helped that policeman and your Mom to find you.”
“I shall not want..." his grandfather continued, but was interrupted again.
"Want what?"
"If you were a sheep you'd want plenty of green grass and water, and a nice cool place to lie down. See, it says that next.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul."
Precious hidden treasures those words that his grandfather deposited in his memory on that day, long ago, returned now to rescue and sustain him.
Through cracked, bleeding lips, the prisoner whispered them:
"The Lord…is…my shepherd;
I…shall...not…want..."

Okay, I know this is going to sound weird, but I just kept picturing John McCain being captured my the Vietcong and him trying to focus on all Jesus had preached about when he was here on earth.
Your words were excellent and a joy to read!
