Piece and Peace
Piece and peace, do you notice both of these words sound the same when you say them? The words though have separate meanings. Peace according to the Encarta Dictionary means a calm and quiet state, free from disturbances and noise. Piece on the other hand means a portion or serving from a larger block or whole. A better description is one of a set of parts that fit together to form a whole or unit. These are two different words that have different meanings but yet sound the same.
Well, once again God has shown me these two words are connected; not only by sound but by their meaning. Over the years I have come to find out the more pieces of myself that I give to God the more peace I have. It has taken me a long time to learn this, but I have found it to be a true statement in my life.
When I first started out as a young Christian, I was committed to giving myself to Christ; or so I thought. I would give God problems, but peace often eluded me. I could never figure out why. As I grew in my Christian faith so did my commitment. Little by little I would give more pieces of myself over to Him; little by little peace grew each passing day. It is an easy concept, but hard to work through. I still have trouble wanting to take back pieces of my life and be in control.
In Psalm 37:5 it tells us to, “Commit your way to the Lord”. The more committed we are to something, the more pieces of ourselves we give, the more we get in return. I think of two examples of people in the Bible that this applies to. First one that comes to my mind is Mary. In Luke 1:26 to 28 it reads, “Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee, called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the descendants of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming in, he said to her ‘Hail favored one! The Lord is with you’”. Now I don’t know because I wasn’t there, but I am thinking she was favored with God because she had given herself to Him completely. All of her pieces belonged to God and she was willing to be used by God. She didn’t hold back. She was blessed with not only having “just” a son, she had God’s son! Wow what a blessing. I think during this difficult period she was at peace because she had given herself completely to God, she didn’t hold back any piece for herself.
On the other hand, we have Judas. I think Judas was committed to Jesus, but I think his commitment to Jesus was not at 100%. I think Judas held back a little of himself. What makes me believe that? In Matthew 26: 14-16, it says, “Then one of the twelve, named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, ‘What are you willing to give me to deliver Him up to you’? And they weighed out to him thirty pieces of silver, and from then on he began looking for a good opportunity to betray him.” It is my belief if you are committed to something you aren’t going to betray who you are committed to. Greed was a sin Judas experienced. We all have sin in our lives, but most of us try really hard not to act on that sin. We ask God for help in dealing with that sin. It doesn’t tell us in the Bible Judas asked for help in dealing with his sin. That makes me believe he was not totally committed to God. He certainly did not have peace in his life. There are other examples that show he was not at peace. The Bible says it was Judas who was a little upset the woman poured expensive perfume on Jesus’ feet (John 12:1-8). We see Judas is not at peace. Even after he'd received his 30 pieces of silver for his betrayal of Jesus, peace eluded him. "Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself." (Matthew 27:5).
God wants total commitment; He doesn’t want us to keep anything for ourselves. Just like a coach asking a team member, “Are you totally committed? Are you willing to give everything up and focus on the sport”?
When I have kept back a piece for myself I soon realize fear, doubt, and temptation roll in and peace rolls out. I am going through some challenges in my life now. But, I am committed to God! God is my focus right now. I am at peace because I have given God the pieces of my life. John 14:27 reads, “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, not let it be fearful”.
Have you given all your pieces to God? Are you holding back? Are you lacking peace in your life? If so, give more of yourself to God and allow God’s peace to fill your thoughts, soul and mind. The more pieces you give of yourself the more peace you will find.
