Gospel
I touch the pendant which sits on my neck. I run my fingers along the smooth gold pillar. My mind reals with the significance of what I am wearing. The images flash through my mind… The twisted crown of thorns pierces into the skin on his forehead. His blood drizzles down the side of his face, mixing in with sweat and tears as his broken body fights to keep going. The wooden cross which lay lifelessly across his bare back splinters into the open flesh, making him constantly relieve each and every lashing he just endured. He is walking down the road to his death surrounded by thousands… yet he is alone. His eyes search the crowd, still pleading for people to listen, to live… to be free. But all he finds is anger and shame. He falls to the ground. The heavy cross smashing down on his fragile, defeated body. He tries to stand, but his legs shake and buckle beneath him. His body screams in pain. He can not physically go on. Yet somehow his spirit stays strong. Somehow at peace. He must finish what he came to do. It had been decided before time began. He focuses on a man coming toward him. The mans eyes display a mixture of fear, pity and injustice. The soldiers are yelling at the man to take the cross. He does. The relief is only brief as he begins now to feel the pain of the man sent to help him to his death. He knows the crowd only want to keep him alive on this walk so that he will suffer and die on the cross. The people. His people. Who he loves so much. He must keep going. It must be done. He stands and resumes his journey. Each step painful. The place of the skull drawing nearer. His death drawing nearer. They walk up the hill. The soldiers force him to take the cross off of the man. The man runs away from what is about to happen. Does he understand what is about to take place? In sharing the journey has the man received a glimpse of the divine intervention? His spirit knows the answer, but his body is too weak to process the information. Yelling interrupts his thoughts. The insults are being drowned out by soldier’s orders to lie on the cross. In the distance he can hear a blood curdling scream as the man next to him is nailed to his cross. He can hear the nail, large and slightly rusted, ripping through skin, bone and flesh. He knows that any second those screams will become reality, as his flawless limbs become tools to bind him to a tree. The hammer slams the nail; a direct hit though his skin. He is instantly, painfully attached to the cross. The pain, unbearable, shoots through every part of his being. Over and over the hammer slams. The irony of him being bound to his own creation is not lost on him. But he can not think of that right now. He has all of time to reflect. But now he must focus. They nail his hands and feet to the wooden cross. The pain is causing him to sway in and out of consciousness. He realises that he is moving. The cross is being fitted into the earth. Sweat and blood drips to the ground, staining the dirt, as his body is raised. Raised not exaltation as he should be, but in shame as a sinner. The sky darkens as creation hides its face from what is happening. His whole body is smeared with blood, sweat and tears. His skin is torn and his wounds are weeping. His body becomes heavy with fatigue. The holes in his hands and feet tear open with the weight of his body. His lungs begin to collapse from the pressure. His breathing becomes laboured. Still the insults hurl. The mockery remains. Their shame and anger is obvious. He cries out to his Father ’My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ There is no reply. He knew there wouldn’t be. This separation, this silence, pains him more than any physical torture could. But it must happen. He must be separated so that creation can be reunited. A wet sponge is forced into his face for him to drink. But his body physically rejects the fluid. His body is slowly and painfully shutting down. With his last breath he cries and he surrenders his spirit for mankind. But as his spirit leaves his broken body, he smiles as he foresees the freedom and grace his resurrection will bring… ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him will not perish, but have eternal life.’
