An old Scottish proverb: "If you don't see the bottom, don't wade!"
One of our favorite places to eat is Bob Evans' Restaurant. Yester-
day we sat at the counter where we had a good view of the whole
operation. This particular restaurant is one finely tuned machine.
Everyone had a particular job that they did well with enthusiasm,
and they all worked well together -- I didn't observe any bickering.
As I ate my meal, I thought, "the Bob Evans' company should hold
seminars for pastors and church leaders on how to smoothly
operate an organization." I've often wondered if pastors get any
organizational skills training or management skills classes in
seminary or is it like a typical high school where they get lots of
generalities but little specific training on how to face life in the real
world and make a living.
In the email I get, I often hear complaints about a problem going on
in a particular church, and that is always sad. I know we are all
human, but as Christians we should be a little super-human
because of the Spirit of God that should be controlling us. I guess
therein lies the problem -- WE want to have control. We should
use the Bob Evans' Principle -- do your job with alacrity (means:
lively, eager, prompt in response, cheerful readiness) and allow
others to do theirs unimpeded. Maybe our churches need alacrity
training.
2 Pet. 3:14, "Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things,
be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and
blameless." Wow, is that ever a goal -- blameless!? That would
take lots of Christian alacrity.
