The Gift
It is that time. Christmas lists have been or are being created and handed out. The signs and sales have started a long time ago in the stores. The crowds and the lines have gotten longer with each day. The intensity is slowly rising.
The tension is starting to mount. Parties, shopping, school and church programs, dinners, the calendar is already overbooked. The search for that right gift for someone, the search for any gift for that certain someone, starts to consume what is left of your time. The budget is getting stretched, the checkbook balance is getting lower and the credit card balance is rising.
As faithful Christians we know the reason for the season. We know that most of this celebration and gift giving is just worldly hype. We wait for Christmas Day to celebrate the birth of our Savior, to praise God for the gift of salvation. But in the waiting for Christmas day, we are not immune to the hustle and bustle of the Christmas Season.
What can we do to stay focused on the Babe in the manger and to not get too wrapped up in the worldly hype of Christmas? Take a hard look at your Christmas list.
What, perhaps, is missing from your Christmas list? Whose name have you forgotten? Is Jesus on your Christmas list? Sound silly – absolutely not. Add Jesus to your list.
What gift can we possibly give to Jesus? Ourselves: the gift of our life, our service and our love. This Christmas season prepare your gift for Jesus. The perfect gift is our imperfect lives. Jesus will cleanse and make perfect whatever we offer him. His only desire is our commitment to him.
Maybe you have not committed all of your life to Jesus. Perhaps you have been holding onto a part of your life and have been unable to give it to Jesus. Give that to him this Christmas, it is a gift that he will cherish. Big or small, I guarantee that it is a gift that will not be returned. What gift will you give to Jesus this Christmas season?
Amen.
