Higher education or career advancement has often been quashed by “spiritual overseers” of authoritarian churches. They discourage saints from “intellectual pursuits” which “minister pride”. Girls in abusive churches are taught that it “isn’t feminine to be smart”. They are not to concern themselves much with higher education or specialty studies to excel in developing their potential. Abusive churches teach young girls that their destiny is to be a good wife and mother whose calling is to “be a keeper at home”. But if this type of situation fails to unfold for a girl who lacks marketable job skills, how will she be able to adequately support herself?
Religious leaders greedy for filthy lucre can be very inconsistent. Those bound in religious cults are exhorted to focus on “spiritual things” ONLY, and by that, the leadership means religious or other activities which might prove beneficial to the group. Religious controllers are AFRAID of sheep who try to get themselves educated, lest the simple grow out of their simplicity grow wise up to the lies they’re being taught in the name of the Lord. But even while personal advancement and education is discouraged as being “of the devil”, these blind leaders of the blind demand regular “tithes” and offerings from hard-pressed individuals and families whose job(s) may be poorly paid. When families crack under the strain, they are castigated for having poor family values. When tithing and offering the first paycheck leaves nothing to live on, the spouse and/or children must be neglected in order to take a second or third job. Then those poor people could be rebuked by the pampered leadership for “neglecting the things of the Lord.”
Charity begins at home! Let the children first be fed! “Radical” religious groups might preach family values, but what happens when those churchy “lose your identity” and “stay humble” sermons backfire? Invariably, the leadership won’t be around to clean up the mess made by their bad counsel. When the saint suffers poverty and financial hardship later in life because of failure to fulfill his/her personal vocational potential, they will only be told to “work harder” to get out of the mess caused by the church’s bad teaching. It is then that the happy clapping and singing stops. When people’s hearts are broken with disillusionment, it’s up to the LORD to pick up the pieces!
