Staying Spiritually Clean

Staying Spiritually clean will take a lot more than a wash bucket or a tub full of bubbles! If it were only that easy. In a world that is filled with enticements, as Christians, how do we stay spiritually clean? There are many things pulling at us in the entertainment and material world. Living in a culture where we are surrounded by such things, it is as if our mind is absorbing everything around us. Even to the point that we have become desensitized to the secularism of it all.
We’ve adapted secularism as being “normal.” Secularism has been around for what seems like forever. All through the old and new testament, we read about God’s people allowing ungodliness to filter into their lives. The Israelites were continually being drawn away from God by their surroundings. They didn’t heed the voice of God; but instead, they heeded the voice of the world they lived in. Over and over again, God was telling them to abstain, resist and be Holy! The book of Isaiah put it this way. (Isaiah 52:11 ) Depart! Depart! Go out from there, touch no unclean thing; Go out from the midst of her, Be clean… That’s the best advice I can find on how to deal with the matter. To come out of and stay away from the worldliness around us. By no means was God telling them to hibernate in a cave to never be seen by the outside world again. What he was telling them was to remove themselves from whatever it was that was tainting their spiritual lives and separating them from intimate communication with Him. We get distracted so easily from the path of life; and just like the Israelites, God is telling us to Depart from those things that are taking us off that narrow path. That may require turning off the television, changing the radio station, being content with what material possessions you already have or changing the friends you’re hanging out with. Whatever it is, change your surroundings and come out of whatever is polluting your life.
I think the biggest downfall we Christians face, is the fact we are not incorporating the Bible’s teaching into our everyday lives. How many times do we hear a message preached or read something from the Bible and we completely believe it to be the truth and the right way to live, but then we don’t apply it to our lives? We must not think it’s relevant for our lives. Why is it so hard for us to live out the principles of the Bible?
Don’t misunderstand me, we have no problem declaring our belief in God, our pro-life view and our stand against drugs/alcohol. But when we look at the bigger issues such as Luke 6: 27 …Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, we ignore that part. Love our enemies? We have hard enough time loving those that aren’t our enemies. We think it’s ok to look down on someone because of their social status, skin color or the way they dress. They don’t fit our mold, so they’re not worthy of our love. But what we’re forgetting is that they too are God’s creation. He loves them just as much as he loves us. How can we think we love God if we can’t love others?
What about gossiping? As a teenager, this was an area that I had no problem participating in. A bit of juicy gossip about someone else was always interesting to hear. I might have even added my 2 cent in if I thought it would add fuel to the fire. Later on I learned what God thought about this conduct. Did you know the Bible says when you talk badly about someone, you have made yourself a self-appointed judge. James 4: 11 Do not speak evil of one another, brethren. He who speaks evil of a brother and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law and judges the law. Talking badly about another is not pleasing in God’s eye.
Television is a weakness that is not easy to control. Not all television is bad, but a large percentage of it contradicts the principles of the Bible. How easily we get sucked in. The producers are looking for extreme forms of entertainment to keep us addicted until the next week. Romans 12:9 Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. As Christians, we are to abhor some of the stuff we see on television rather than allowing it to entertain us. A lot of the shows nonchalantly promote, promiscuity, adultery, homosexuality, blasphemy and perversion, yet we think it’s entertaining and sit there to watch.
1 John 2:6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked. We aren’t called Christians for nothing. We are to reflect Christ to the world through our actions. John 13:35 By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. Loving God and then loving others are the greatest commandments to live by. Let’s get out there and live like Christians!
