The Prayer Box 1985
Our church had a single's group that met every Friday. We had begun to write on index cards our prayer requests and put them in the box. Anyone who wanted could take the box and pray over the cards. I took them with me for a few days and planned to return them that Sunday.
Well, life at that time was a big change in job description. Definitely less money, though somehow I did not feel the crunch or just oblivious of it. With the index cards I would pray for each request and place it on the floor in front of me. As time went on, I prayed again and again, sitting on the floor, picked up one and placed it on the floor, moved to the next.
I brought the box with the cards to service on Sunday. I sat on the upper floor (second floor) of a church that sat 6000. Before service began we had a time of altar prayers, and elders standing on the second floor to pray for anyone. I went up to this elder with my box of prayers and he prayed with me. I went back to my seat. Then the service moved on, the pastor stepped in a lull in the song, and walked to the microphone and said, "If you have been praying for someone, or standing in the breach, or need prayer now is the time to come."
The song was;
I tried all that I could,
seem like nothing, would do me any good,
then I heard about Jesus, and He was passing by,
so I decided to give Him a try.
And oh, it is Jesus, wonderful Jesus,
it's Jesus, in my soul,
For I have touched, the, hem of His Garment,
and His Blood has, made me whole.
Oh my Jesus, well He healed my body,
when I was crying, when I was blue,
all I had to do was touch, the hem of His Garment,
and His Blood has, made me whole.
This song is in memory of the woman with the issue of blood, who had seen many doctors, and was none the better. Then she heard that a man named Jesus was travelling through, healing people. Now any Jew knows a woman, bleeding, you are unclean, and can not come in contact with the holy. She was desperate, she made a decision to go after Jesus. Now the first born of any Jew is considered a healer, and touching but the hem of His Garment which was the prayer shawl, as it is written, "has healing in its wings". She planned to touch the shawl as this she believed no one would know and Jesus would not feel her reaching out, but He did. Her faith tapped into the power of Christ before He died for her, and was glorified, and He felt release of His Power, He did not directly face her to do it, her faith reached out, and made her whole. As then He asked in the middle of a crowd pressing upon Him, "Who touched me?"
As I was standing on the second floor the moment the pastor said, to come, something said, go! I responded quickly, like I was on fire, I gathered up all my belongings, and half ran down the stairs.
Now let me tell you, you will not see me run in front of everyone like I did. I am a stand in the back, you don't see me, kind of person. But I did not think of this as I was moving, I came through the back of the church doors, pushed in, and moved quickly as I could. If you had seen me, you would think it was an emergency. Someone I knew from the singles group saw me and came up to me from her pew, and said, Hi! Heather..., I stopped her and said, I got to get to the altar, here, and I dumped my things in her seating area, and kept moving.
I got to the front and the elder that prayed for me on the upper floor, was standing in front of me. He said, "I already prayed for you upstairs." Now I am stubborn, and I didn't care what he said. I closed my eyes, and raised my hands. I thought, man, get outta of my way. I guess he anointed my head with a drop of oil, maybe not, I didn't open my eyes, but I felt a drop of oil only on my forehead. I held the index cards of prayer requests in my hands. As soon as I felt the drop, it happened.
I heard everything going on around me. Prayer, music, people moving, but also what I was hearing. I heard a strong wind, and slowly all the noise around me of people dulled, and the wind was in my core, located under my rib cage, in the middle of my being is the best that I can describe. I heard it, then a stillness, then a light I could see and my eyes were closed. After the light filled me, a presence passed through and voice came. He said, "I hear my servant, I will answer your prayers." Then the presence moved, light slowly dimmed, the noise level of people around me I heard again.
Their was a woman from my singles group, I heard her say, "Heather, the Lord is all over you!" She lightly held my left arm as it was still raised. I then noticed I was trembling uncontrollably. All I could think of was, as I told my friend, when I could, "Jesus just talked to me! He said, I hear my servant, I will answer your prayers!" I turned and headed to my singles group leader's wife, and handed her the box, and said, "These prayers have been answered!"
As I got to the seat next to my friend, I was still in awe, Jesus talked to me up close and personal, me! Wow! I will say it backwards, woW! What a memory to keep while walking earth, all mine to cherish, better than any gift I could ever receive. I still long for another encounter of the Jesus kind like this one.
