I said I wasn't going to do it. I even promised myself I wasn't going to do it. God laughed and said we shall see. He woke me up with new insight and of course it dealt with the Super Bowl. So, once again God proved me wrong. Here is His take on the Super Bowl. Sorry, Bear fans. You'll have to take it up with God.
There are at least three comparisons that I can make with the Super Bowl and Christianity. The first one God shared with me is obvious. We have all experienced it ourselves or know someone who has. I followed the Colts from the day they moved from Baltimore to Indianapolis. This was Pre-Manning time. The Colts weren't hot, they weren't even lukewarm. They were lousy. I kept rooting for them. Family and friends laughed at me, saying things like, "The Colts are a lousy team, they will never amount to much, and Indianapolis made a mistake when they took them". It was ridicule from day one. I kept my chin up; knowing someday they would be somebody. The day would come when they would win the Super Bowl. Everyone thought I was nuts. How many times have you been ridiculed or heard someone else being ridiculed?. How many times have you heard, someone say, "He is a loser, that guy will never amount to much, don't put a lot of faith in him?" I have heard parents in stores constantly put a child down. I helped in school as a parent volunteer and many times a child was seen as no good. Well, you can't count on your fingers those people in the Bible who were considered no good, yet God took them and made them into something special. Moses, for example was a murderer. Many people today would have seen him as no good, not worth a dime, yet he went on to greatness. Paul had many people put to death, yet he wrote many books of our Bible, and helped organize the church. The disciples left their jobs, homes, and family to follow a rebel and look at what they became.Even Jesus in his hometown was a nobody and many people I am sure wrote Him off as a failure, yet He died for you and I. Who we see many times as failures, as no good, God sees as possibilities.
The next thing God pointed out to me was Tony Dungy. Everyone wanted to make a big deal about his background and making history. That was important to Tony, but what was even more important to him and Lovie Smith was the fact they were Christian men and were proud of it. So many of our coaches can be seen along the sidelines cussing and screaming negatives at the players. These two men know Jesus and know that is not how you treat someone. They also want the world to know there is a better way to coach and to be "role models". They want the world to know their God is important to them. So many times we find it hard to share our God, our faith, and our religion with those we work with, our neighbors, and friends, yet these men didn't care what the world thought, they did what they wanted to do; they shared their love of God with the world. They shared their Christian faith in the everyday world. These men opened up the door and gave each of us an opportunity to share our love of God with others, will we do it?
The other big talk during the Super Bowl week was how both Tony and Payton had a monkey on their back and would this been the time to get it off? It took some time, but through God and His timing they both got the monkey of their backs. Tony even acknowledged it was God who decided the timing was right, the team had to be patient, let God work. Each one of us is carrying some kind of monkey on our backs. If we aren't now we either have at one time or will sometime in the future. It is not easy carrying a heavy load of any kind on our backs. These men did it for several years. They both knew in their hearts somehow God would deliver them from their heavy load. They didn't scramble around like we often do and try to get it off themselves. They believed and trusted God; they knew He would do it in His time. They put their faith in God and He delivered them. Too many times we ask God to deliver us from somthing we are carrying around with us, some monkey on our back or some extra luggage we are toting. We give it to God and then too many times we aren't patient enough to wait on God. We want it in our time; our way. If we had the faith these two men had we would know God would deliver us when the time is right or the circumstances is right. God has promised never to leave or forsake us, He has also promised He won't give us more than we can handle. What He does ask of us is just to trust Him, and know He is always with us, and when the time is right He will take the monkey off of our backs, or He'll take the luggage we are toting. Just as Tony and Payton celebrated the victory we too will celebrate one day.
There are lessons always to be learned in every circumstance in life. We just need to be opened to God's teachings and be aware of His presence every day. God has shared His thoughts with me on the Super Bowl. What is God sharing with you today? Are you listening to His voice? Do you see Him as you walk your daily path? He is willing to teach, we just need to be willing to listen.
