It was early in the morning on Friday before 5:00am when Flavius led Jesus now in shackles, which Flavius did not want to do, to the entrance of the Praetorium. This was Pilate's Jerusalem residence and it also contained the judgement hall which cases were brought before him. Flavius was instructed not to take Jesus into the Praetorium. Rabbinical tradition said that if Jews entered the home of a Gentile, they would be defiled and unable to partake the Passover feast. The Sanhedrin demanded to see Pilate outside the Praetorium.
All of a sudden, Flavius saw the Roman Govenor standing in the balcony above them. He looked tired after being aroused at this early hour. Pilate looked at Flavius and the others and said " what accusation do you have against this man?". The reply Pilate got he was not expecting.
" If he were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered him to you".
