Faith

Everyday when I awake
There is one thing I always do
Lord, I never seem to fail
To ask something of You.

Then somehow I realized
Just how selfish, but oh so true.
Today I’ll try something different
I’m asking what I can do for You.

I figured whatever the Lord would ask of me
Would be a magnificent task to do.
I was surprised when He answered
“Just love me as much as I love you.”

This seemed like something so simple
There was no way I could fail.
But when I stopped and contemplated
All that request would entail.

If I could only love Him
As much as He loved me.
Everything I’d do would be to please Him
And in His presence I would always long to be.

If I but could show Him
All the love He’s sent my way.
It would easily spill over to others
As they cross my path each day.

I would have no room for hatred
In my life it would have no part.
Because the love for all that is God’s
Would fill every corner of my heart.

I would have no time for jealousy
Or pettiness of any kind.
Pleasing God through others
Would be all that would be on my mind.

This great challenge that He gave me
I now to you entrust.
By loving God and all that’s His
Just as much as He loves us.
