Why We Do It
You know often I have been asked why?
Why should I, for others sake, be willing to die?
Why would I purposely put myself in harm’s way?
Why do I sacrifice and work hard for little pay?
Is it because of my personal political views?
Is that why the military life is what I choose?
Why am I so willing to lay down my life?
And being separated from my kids and wife?
Why do I do what it is that I choose to do?
It is a fair question and I will answer all of you
It is out of love that I choose to live and die
Freedom, life, and liberty too, but love is really why!
Brothers and Sisters,
Greetings in the Name of Our Lord.
I do not speak for any branch of service or for anyone else. These are my words from my heart. It is a valid question to ask, why someone would choose such a lifestyle. I have been asked it. I have asked myself it on occasion.
It is something beyond description actually. As anyone who has served or is serving can tell you, we all joined for our own reasons, but there is something in common. I can promise you that it is not for the pay. Pay has gotten better, but I could make a good amount of money doing some of the jobs I have done over the years if I was in the civilian sector.
As I child I decided that someday I would serve my country. I didn’t know what branch, but I knew that I was going to serve. I am a bit of an idealist and have always been. I would watch war movies and talk to some of the veterans in my family. It just seemed like the right thing to do.
I can list some of the reasons I chose to serve my country. First are patriotism and a sense of duty. I love my country (even when it seems broken and hopeless at times). We have great freedom that is taken for granted and great men fought and died to give it to us. I felt I owed it to our veterans from the Revolutionary war to current warriors. It is an honorable profession. Second, reason was opportunity. It was an opportunity to do something to be proud of for life. It was a chance to see the world and a chance to learn good character traits. The first was good enough to get me to the recruiter’s office and opportunity helped sign the papers that sent me to boot camp 16 years ago come this 23rd.
After all these years I have opportunity to look back on my years of service and reflect on many things. Next year I will have served exactly half my life in the military, which makes one think on things like this. Why would I spend have my life obeying the orders of others which could include sending me to my death (though I must admit I have not faced the dangers the men and women in country are facing). I have faced some situations that have scared me to the bone, been away from my family longer than anyone should be, and have been to places that I would just as soon never remember again. Yet, I do not regret any of it.
It took me receiving salvation from Our Lord that I realized that all of it can be summed up in LOVE.
I do not write this to gain sympathy or gratitude. I do not write this for myself at all and it is not necessary to feel obligated to say anything at all. It is kind of awkward, appreciated but awkward, when people thank me for my service. It is like thanking me for breathing. It is just something that I had to do. If you want to thank anyone then thank the families of those that are there and those that have gone before. It is easy to offer our lives and do our jobs. It is the families that suffer in this lifestyle.
God bless each of you. I thank you for the service that you are doing for God and Our Lord Jesus Christ. May the Holy Spirit shine in your life and let others see God’s mercy and grace in you.
A servant of Our Lord,

Yes indeed, as Thomas said, we are very proud of you. I'm honored to call you Brother. When my neice was at sea for eight months, I did appreciate what she was doing. However, I saw what her husband and children went through. I gained a great respect for my young nephew-in-law as a result. I'm just so glad that her children were still toddlers. A big difference between you and her... she only served for a couple of years. Your dear, dear family has a very special spot in my prayers. Love to you and yours... and great peace.

'It is the families that suffer in this lifestyle.'
So true Christian. My father is retired AF and I have often wondered if other family members feel left out during 'recongnition days' of those who serve our country for they truly do sacrifice as well.
I enjoyed reading what your heart feels - you state it so well.
God bless, and prayers. Pat
