This morning I received the news that a very dear friend was killed in a motorcycle accident on Wednesday night. This friend had been a source of inspiration, not to mention a key factor in my starting and continuing to write poetry.

Her 44 years on earth were marked by a great deal of drug abuse, jail and alcohol. It would be easy to look at her life and wonder if her life had any meaning at all.

Fortunately I got to see a side of her while we were incarcerated that proved she loved the Lord and I just knew she would make it when she got out.

Unfortunately, she soon fell back into the drug lifestyle but I still contend that she knew Christ as her Savior. She touched many inmates lives and through her prodding to keep me writing, no one will ever know how many lives she will touch.

My dear friend, Valerie. I love you and miss you.

A LIFE WORTHWHILE

How do you judge a life worthwhile?
Is it by the possessions they’ve achieved,
By fame that might have been granted them
Or how by others they are perceived.

The most significant life
Is not measured by any of the above
The scale is set to weigh
When and whom you chose to love.

The first choice should be for the Father
For He is the One who created you.
Then sent His Son for your redemption
So you wouldn’t face what He’d been through.

Then family, friends and all the others
Should have the next greatest part
For others are so much easier to love
Once Christ resides within our heart.

We know our lives are successful
When judged by one thing alone
That’s when. At the end, the Heavenly Father
Lovingly can say “Welcome Home.”
