Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: If it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. John 14:1-3 King James Version
Let not... do not give your heart permission to be troubled... It is almost as if Jesus is so instructing his disciples. He is speaking this encouraging word to them following his dialogue with Peter concerning Peter's denial of him. He knew that the next turn of events, his arrest and crucifixion, would scatter his little flock and sow fear in their hearts.
The disciples loved their Lord Jesus Christ and to see him seemingly powerless and at the mercy of the cruel authorities would inflict grave doubts upon their hearts and minds. It is for these moments that the Lord Jesus leaves these words of courage and comfort.
He tells them to continue to believe in Him in the midst of apparent contradiction and disaster. He draws their eyes of faith to heaven and the place prepared for them by him. And not only would he reach beyond time and circumstance to make this place for them, but, he, at an appointed time, would renew them into a fellowship with him which would never end. Brief would be the days that he would spend with them after the cross and his resurrection but there would be a time when he would "receive you unto myself." It is because of who he is that he could assure them, "let not your hearts be troubled."
