My father died right before Christmas 2002, leaving my mother alone after 61 years of marriage. My mother had read a verse about climbing up to heaven and bringing him home again. She asked me to print it out for her so she could frame it.

I knew my mother well enough that after what Dad has gone through with Alzheimer's she would not have really wished him back. She had no doubt that Dad was in the arms of the Father and she was looking forward to joining him one day.

I wrote the following poem for her for Christmas this year to express now I knew my Mother really felt.

HAND IN HAND

We traveled down life’s highway
Hand in hand all the way
Neither one giving much thought
One would be traveling it alone one day.

Now for awhile I must travel on my own
And there are days I don’t know where to start
But I know that even if you aren’t holding my hand
You’ll always be holding my heart

But soon we’ll be reunited
And I’m longing for that day
For once again we’ll walk hand in hand
But this time down Heaven’s highway.

‘Til then I’ll keep dreaming my dreams
As the tears flow gently down
But these are tears of joy, not sorrow
For I feel your presence all around.

If dreams could build a stairway
And tears make those dreams come true
I’d have enough to reach to heaven
And climb right up to you.

Tracey, this is so beautiful and I love it. It is a keeper. It is good to read your poetry on FaithWriters again, and I am glad you are getting over being sick during Christmas. God bless.
Thomas
