Two dirty dogs and one clean cat
Showed up on my welcome mat.
I said to my mom, “Can we keep them please?”
Mom smiled at me and said, “We’ll see.”

Mom spoke to Dad, who shook his head.
“What if we get a fish instead?”
“I want a pet who can run and play,
A fish just swims in his bowl all day.”

Mom said to me as she held my hand,
“A hermit crab will play in the sand.”
“A crab for a pet? That sounds like a joke.
I want a pet just like other folks.”

Dad scratched his head, and he said to me,
“My boss has a bird we can get for free.”
“A bird from your boss is not a good catch.
If I throw a stick, a bird won’t fetch.”

Mom looked at me as she boiled some rice,
“I think an ant farm would be nice.”
I rolled my eyes and said, “No way!
Ants can’t cuddle on a rainy day.”

Dad sipped his coffee and thought for a while.
“A frog is good,” he said with a smile.
“A frog can’t do tricks, like bark and beg.
You must be kidding or pulling my leg.”

“How about a hamster?” Mother tried.
“No, no, no! Won’t you hear my side?
A hamster is nothing more than a mouse.
He cannot growl and protect our house!

The dogs will love us every day,
And the cat can chase the mice away.
The perfect pets are in our yard,
You will love them. It’s not hard.”

Mom said to Dad, “I guess, I see,
It wouldn’t be hard to love these three.”
Dad looked at mom and said with a sigh,
“Let’s give the dogs and the cat a try.”
