(Continued from Part Five: Master of eHarmony and A Fruitful
Conversation)
Adam was fingering his left rib. How was the Lord going to get
Woman back in there, anyway? He thought about what camels
looked like, and shrugged. If the Lord could make those funny-
looking creatures, he could do just about anything.
"Hello, Adam." A voice, much softer and a lot less crankier than
the Lord's, came to Adam's big ears.
Adam had been loping along, chewing on another nut. He really
liked nuts a lot. So far, eating was fun, and gave him something
to do. The Lord had rumbled some vague words about 'gardening', but seemed to have forgotten about it. Adam certainly hoped so; whatever it was, it didn't sound like a lot of fun. There were still yet 57 varieties of species left to name; that would be enough work for the rest of one day, at least. Next week, maybe he
and the Lord could come up with a new project. Adam was
certainly serious about getting rid of 'skats', as well as Creating
a new, and better type of plantain.
He stopped, and almost smacked the side of his head, again, into
a tree. Woman was standing in front of him, on the grassy path.
Why was it that every time she appeared, he was about to hit
his head on a tree?
"Hello, uh, Woman. How come you don't have a name? Everybody
else around here, does." Adam scowled. He wasn't too sure if he
was glad to see her. First, his rib got really sore because of her.
Next, she made him knock his head into a big tree. Then, she
almost ignored him, and went off by herself to do Lord knows what.
Finally, because of her, Adam had sauntered off in a new direction,
and had gotten lost. Not to mention the fact that since her
appearance, the Lord had been in sort of a bad mood.
"You're supposed to name me, Adam." Woman rolled her long-
lashed eyes, and took a bite out of a pear. Her amused eyes
looked him up and down. She didn't seem very impressed. From
the look on her rounded face, Adam might have been one of the
Lord's camels.
"I don't like those." Adam stated simply. He tossed another nut
into his stubbly mouth. How come the Lord had given her more......
more flesh? Was she going to be His favorite creature, now? Adam
scowled again; he remembered the Lord saying that HE was His
favorite creature! That wasn't fair.
"What are you thinking about, Adam?" Woman took another small
bite out of the green, waxy fruit. Her teeth were straight, and
very white. Adam wondered about his own teeth; immediately, he
stuck a finger to his mouth, and hit himself in the nose.
"Nothing." Adam looked around sulkily. "Why did you come all
the way over here? The Lord had a tough time finding you."
Woman laughed in a way that made Adam's spine tingle.
"The Lord got lost? How did that happen?" Woman looked
incredulous, and gently shook her mane of curls.
Adam now put a clumsy hand up to his head, and scratched.
How come HE hadn't gotten a big head of hair? What was the
Lord trying to do, anyway? Maybe......maybe, He would decide to
get rid of Adam, and just keep this creature. She already seemed
a little smarter than him. Maybe....maybe, that was His Plan, all along!
"Oh, forget it." Adam stopped scratching, and sat down, morosely,
on a rock. Immediately, he got up. There was a big, sleeping spider
on it. Now, the spider was awake. "Aah!" Adam yelled a word that
he hadn't heard his Lord use, yet.
Woman laughed again. She turned, as if suddenly a bit bored with
his company, and began wandering off. She seemed very relaxed,
gently touching a bit of greenery, here and there.
"Hey! Where are you going, now?" Adam rubbed at a suddenly
very itchy place, where the big, sleeping-now-awake spider had
been, and limped after her.
"Hm?" Woman murmured, not bothering to stop her swaying limbs.
Adam was talking to her smooth back, and he didn't like it, very
much. The Lord had always walked along side him. They were like
pals, buddies, almost. Why did this creature have to come along?
Frowning, Adam hoped that there wasn't going to be anything else
coming out of his rib - at least, not for a while, anyhow.
The new moon shone down upon both of them. Adam squinted at
it; first, he tried his left, and then his right eye. Neither of them
could see it very well. He blinked again. Did that thing have a face,
or what? He reached out, and touched Woman on a bare shoulder.
"Hey, uh.....Woman? Do you see a face up there?"
"What are you talking about, Adam? You never seem to make much
sense." Woman shook her wild curls, again, and kept walking.
"Come here. I have to show you something."
"What now?" Adam's voice betrayed his ornery state. Maybe,
he should just turn around, and head back toward his favorite,
rippling stream. Then, he could grab some more nuts, and find
his favorite dogs. He would need some sleep, however, if he
was going to continue His Lord's work, tomorrow. Naming
those 57 varieties was going to take him awhile. The bigger
beasts were kind of bothersome; they always roamed about, and
began mooing, growling, or bleating, while Adam was trying to
come up with a worthwhile name for them. How come the Lord
hadn't given all this work to Woman?
"Oh, stop sounding so crabby, Adam. Every since I've met you,
you've seemed to be such a grump." She laughed again, and then
suddenly stopped. "See, Adam? What do you think of this?"
Adam halted in his grassy tracks, too, and put his big hairy fists
on his narrow hips. "What? What is it? How come we're not
eating or sleeping, right now? It's too dark out here, Woman!
And, I can't see that well, as it is."
"Oh, really? I can see just fine. Hm, I guess your eyes aren't as
good as mine. Well, turn this way, Adam. No, over here. Now,
look!" She pointed a slim finger in his face, toward the western
slopes.
Adam squinted, and sniffed, irritably. "What? I don't see
nothing!" Then, he craned his head forward. "Hey! What's that?"
