Conscience' s Two Voices
Author requests article critique
There is something that lives within you. It has chosen you as home. It's name is CONSCIENCE. The soft whisperings or urgings of this beautiful gift of God directs us to what is right and wrong. It prods us to a life rich with meaning and excellence.
However, this conscience can have two voices. Yes, we don't hear one voice in our heads but two! It is so for our minds or hearts are capable of confusion and endless clutter. Our conscience may be impeded towards growth and unity.
The first voice in our conscience is a great gift. It leads to happiness, peace, and excellence. It is a voice of wisdom, truth, reason, and light. It makes us aware of morality or the difference between right and wrong.
On the other hand, should we decide to ignore the gentle urgings of the first voice, our constant companions will be regret, tension or stress, fear, anxiety, guilt, shame, and despair. Truly, those who wander on the path of life due to the second voice or "false self" of conscience is such a pitiful sight. As St. Anthony puts it, blind are they who see not their own conscience; lame are they who wander from the right way."
Thus, the conscience is an inner mechanism that assesses the worthiness of our desires, goals, urges, and actions. It is a moral compass that points to goodness and excellence. But we need always to discern the influence of its second voice -- our false self, our wounded self, our ego, or inner demon. The first voice (true conscience) make you better; the second voice (false conscience) makes you bitter.
Let our conscience be our best friend. To bypass the clutter of negative thoughts, confusing emotions, and dangerous temptations, we need quiet and give it opportunity to speak to us. The more we listen to it, the closer we become the most wonderful person we can be -- our true self.
