As I meditated on the parable of the prodigal son some thoughts just crossed my mind.
After many days the son has atlast returned home. Followed hard roads, hunger and pain, how many days it took him to find his way back we have no idea. But it is at the very point that he thinks "I will arise and go to my father..." that I was struck with the fact that this guy knew his father. He had rebelled yes, but he had not forgotten who his father was. Even at his worst, he does not question the love of his father. We see him repentant, but most of all I see almost a taking it for granted that he will be taken back (maybe like a servant) never the less taken back.
I see no thoughts of how "mad my dad will be.." or "he's never gonna forgive me for this one.." All I see is a child planning a way back to his father.
I realise how many times I forget what God is like and my mind creates images of rejection where there should be none. He is my father and the only thoughts I should have as his child are to be filled with a knowledge of who he is - a God of steadfast love. My circumstances or choices or sins do not change him in any way, he still remains my father. What can stop me from heading home when I know my dad is there and I know for a fact that he is the kindest dad you could ever wish for (especially to kids who were sorry for what they did.) Thats something all of us learnt when we were first born into his family, thats a truth for us today. He is a God of steadfast love, unchanging! Where ever each of us might have headed off to, I think its time to come home cause this God is just not changing!
