Poetry
Agonizing,
on His knees,
He asks,
"Father, is there another way?"
"No, my beloved Son, there is not."
In great distress,
He wipes His brow and answers,
"Then I'll go Father, because You asked."
"I will be with You," promises the Father
as a tear drops from heaven.
He returns to His friends
asleep in the garden.
There is no one to comfort Him,
aside from His Father.
Only a kiss that burns with
the sting of betrayal,
received from the lips of a friend.
With swords drawn, the soldiers storm the garden.
He does not hide, He does not run,
but steps up to greet them
and offers Himself.
He is bound with cords He could so easily break.
All His friends run in fear
as He is arrested
and taken.
"So You're the Son of God?" His accusers sneer.
"It is as you say," He humbly replies.
A guilty verdict is returned,
brought on by fear and envy and hate.
He offers no defense as they
beat Him, spit on Him, mock Him,
and trade a murderer's life for His own.
The Holy City is vibrant with Passover activity.
Children run in the streets
as lambs are led to the altar.
Worshippers seek God in the temple courtyards,
as God watches His only Son
being led to Golgotha.
As thorns crown His head
He carries the cross on His back
and staggers and stumbles
under the eyes of the crowd.
His back is stripped bare
from the blows of the whip,
yet He does not cry out
as He falls to the ground.
His burden is lifted
and strong arms help Him up.
Love shines from His eyes
as He looks upon Simon.
A soft, silent "thank you" is said by His Father.
Ringing steel can be heard
as the nails meet His hands.
He is lifted up high,
flanked by two thieves.
"Father, forgive them," He prays,
as shouts come from the crowd.
"You say you're God's Son,
prove it,
come down."
But His love is too great
to alter the plan.
He is the final Passover Lamb.
Fully alert,
in pain beyond measure,
His heart of a servant pumps
life through His body.
There is no self pity,
or anger,
or malice.
Only last minute words of restoration and love.
Words of salvation for a
thief with new faith;
And someone to comfort His grieving mother.
The sky turns to black
as He hangs on the cross.
All the sins of the world
are now His to possess.
The prince of the darkness
roams free on the hill
and laughs in His face
sensing victory is near.
"Father, where are You?",
He cries in despair.
But His torment is heightened
by the silence He hears.
The face of His Father has
turned from the sight.
Holy God and pure sin can't
share the same place.
And now it is finished,
The Son's voice is heard,
"Father, please take me
back into your arms."
A crack splits the air
as the earth falls away.
Fear opens the eyes of the guards
who stand near.
"It's true what was said, God's Son is up there."
The veil of the temple
is ripped in two parts,
the deeds of the Son
allow man to meet God.
His body is buried,
a stone seals the tomb.
After three days, as promised,
nothing remains.
His friends are afraid
that His body's been taken,
But the angels proclaim,
"He lives, He is risen!"
Death is defeated
the victor is Jesus.
Through Him there is life
we need only surrender.
Believe in His name
and join Him forever.
