Larry Lilly's Letter Monday February 20, 2006
The news of last week caused many including me to remember some old songs and sayings that may have been based on fact rather than fancy.
Years ago when I met The Great Blonde, the word of that era was, "Larry and Joyce are crazy about each other." Her mother said we were crazy about me. Truth be known I was crazy about Joyce and after three years of craziness we demonstrated total insanity by setting sail on The Sea of Matrimony. We have now been sailing for nigh onto 42 years.
The week past several news outlets ran the results of studies pointing out that some people do have brain blasts when they first meet other people. This is called love by the world at large, and true love by many idiots from small villages. That a 'hot spot' (their term) develops in a measurable, visible way in the brain is a matter of photo evidence, said 'hot spot' occurring in the 'reward' area of the brain, hence the feeling, "If only I can have that person, I will be happy."
Yep, you guessed it. The noticeable 'hot spot' cools with time. Trouble is too many have mistaken this 'hot spot' for something that will last. In no case does the 'hot spot' last with the initial intensity. During this flash time, lasting relationships can be cobbled and friendship that last a lifetime formed often resulting in happy families.
The same noted 'hot spot' in the brain is attributed to lust as well as love. I assume that so called homosexuals experience the same 'hot spot.'
The physical attraction resulting from the brain flash is natural.
So what are we to do when we experience said 'hot spot?'
The Bible has the answer or answers to an often complex reality. The question: What to do when the brain goes into ‘hot spot' mode? The answer: Do what the Bible says. Do not permit the 'hot spot' to rule you, but rather turn your life over to the Word of God, the Spirit of God and the common sense with which the Lord has endowed you. And counsel from older, wiser Christians is also a good idea. The list of questions to ask is too long for this article.
The consummation of the desires initiated by the 'hot spot' can only be legitimately alleviated within the bonds of marriage and marriage should only be entered into, long after the initial flash has cooled down and some semblance of sanity restored.
The 'hot spot' experience is normal to all human beings. A bibilcal response is what separates moral humans from the 'dogs' mentioned in scripture who only react instinctively.
