Rain! We’ve been praying for rain for weeks, some people have prayed for months. This part of the country I call home is in the midst of the eighth driest year since they began keeping records of rainfall. I live in a tinderbox.
I remember walking out the back door about two weeks ago, noting the lightest dew on the ground, and thanking God. A few days later, when I walked out the door on my way to work, I was met with very dry temperatures in the 30’s. But within a couple of hours the rise in temperature had covered my car with condensation – and I thanked God for every drop of moisture my eyes beheld, and those I couldn’t see. Last week a fog blanketed much of our landscape, not thick, but a good fog, nonetheless, and my heart couldn’t help but say, “Thank you, Lord! Thank you!”
Immediately came a remembrance of the
… when mist rose from the earth covering the entire face of the ground, and I knew … God had not forgotten us, as still, we pray for rain.
I realized, today, reading Genesis 7, what I’ve really been praying. And in the bittersweet midst of it, feel blest.
Have I ever, when praying for rain, stopped to realize for what I was praying? Before my words winged heavenward, had I thought on
Paul writes in Romans 8:28 …
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son...
A righteous God, in order to act righteously, needed to judge sin. Accomplishing its purpose, nonetheless, judgment wrapped itself in mercy and grace … in blessing.
Scripture reminds us that a father disciplines the son he loves. Despite what the disciplined one may feel at the moment of discipline, love is actually showering upon him blessing.
There’s this thought, just outside my grasp, my ability to express … a whispering almost. Children think they deserve the unrestricted freedom to do whatever they want, consequence free. But ‘evil’ will out, and will ultimately feast upon its henchmen, much like a black widow upon her mate. Love, if it’s truly love, must step in to save those he loves, from destruction.
When I’m praying for rain, am I not, in essence, seeking the blessing of divine judgment? Saying, “Almighty Loving God, stop our headlong rush into sin. My rush into sin. Put to death the sin still abiding in my life, the sin outside Your will for me. Thank you for the undeserved harboring of my soul within the safety of Your Righteousness. Thank you for the merciful showers of Your blessing.”
Rain … that blessing resulting from the divine judgment of a most loving, merciful God. As glorious a promise as the rainbow is, when
needs rain, may I find the courage to say with the psalmist:
Cleanse me from secret faults. Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins. Let them not have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, and I shall be innocent of great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer.
Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxious thoughts; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

"Let them not have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless"
Oh, that we could save ourselves from being so sinful! But we can't. And when we humble ourselves to admit that, it is then, and only then, that the Lord's "blessed judgement," His divine judgement, His merciful judgement can do what we need so badly for it to do. Oh, thank You, my God, my Salvation, for the blood covenant and blessed judgement I have with You according to that life-giving grace of Your SON. Hallelujah! This blessed article ought to truly touch the heart of every reader.

I am thankful that, "Judgment wrapped itself in mercy and grace … in blessing."
May the Lord cleans us of any sin which remains in our lives and give us the strength to walk in obedience to His will and way. Thank you for helping bring insight to His Words and allowing the Holy Spirit to bring the words to life.
