Has anyone ever asked you where you were when you accepted Jesus? I have heard that question asked so many times. Most people I know can remember vividly where they accepted Christ. They love to talk about it. In fact, they get tears in their eyes when they start picturing the church altar or their living room sofa. I love to see people fondly remembering where they were “saved.”
I never care to answer the question myself. In fact, I hate to answer the “where were you saved?” question. But, for the many that have asked and never got an answer, I will finally let the cat out of the bag. When I accepted Jesus, I was-
Before I tell you where I was, I want to tell you that Jesus can reach you no matter where you are. You are never away from Him. There is no place you can go that He hasn’t been or won’t go with you. Keep in mind, every place that exists is only there because He has created it.
Psalm 139:7 – 10 says, “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, Even there Your hand will lead me, And Your right hand will lay hold of me.” (NASB)
Where can we go to run from Him? As the psalmist said, He is “…there…” I love the slogan on the Visa commercials. The announcer always talks about the cool things you can do with the Visa card. Then he says, “Visa, it’s everywhere you wanna go.” Jesus is not only where you want to go, He is where you don’t want to go. He is where you never dreamed you could go. He has gone ahead of you and prepared the way. He has even been to the putrid places you will go and have gone. He has been there so He could forgive you.
Where was I when I received Jesus? I was using the bathroom. No, I wasn’t in the tub. I was not brushing my teeth. I was using the toilet. Not for a short while either. But it was just long enough for Jesus to reach a 6 year old boy.
As you can imagine, I was often on the receiving end of many jokes when I actually told people where it all happened. But it didn’t matter to Jesus. He still came into my heart and settled. Jesus was willing to enter the most unsightly place to be with me. All I had to do was start talking to the Savior and He responded.
Many people try to run from God. Many times the spiritual refugees flee to “things” rather than places. For the drug addict it is the choice for pleasure over peace. Of course, the pleasure the addict seeks is only fleeting. The peace that Jesus offers is everlasting. Jesus is there though. Jesus is sitting in that run-down apartment with the junkie while he tries effortlessly to cure the munchies. With every shot of blow Jesus winces for the pain he can feel in his wrists. With every track the man lays-down on his arm, Jesus moans for the thorns that pressed his own brow.
Whether you have fled to alcoholism, pornography, sexual addiction, hobbies or even food, there is no place you could go that Jesus would not find you. You are the creation of the Almighty and He has purposed to prove His love for His creation. You will never be good enough or clean enough to present your self to Jesus. In fact, Jesus didn’t ask for that. The Lord only asked you to present your self as you are. It is Jesus that will make you clean. It is Jesus that can keep you clean. It is Jesus that accepted a 6 year old boy sitting on the toilet.
There is a country song I like called “I’m Already There” by LoneStar. The song talks about a traveling man that calls home to talk to his family. The chorus says,
I'm already there
Take a look around
I'm the sunshine in your hair
I'm the shadow on the ground
I'm the whisper in the wind
I'm your imaginary friend
And I know I'm in your prayers
Oh I'm already there.
