An hour long drive full of ripped clouds and sprinklets of rain has found me back in my hometown of Texarkana. Texarkana is where I spent the first 23 years of my life. At the end of August of this year, I moved to Shreveport. For so long I dreamed of the day of moving out of my hometown and experiencing a new life in a new place. Fresh faces I had never seen, downtown streets that I had never walked, small coffee shops in little corners of the city - so much to be explored.
It's been 3 months now since I've taken my life's journey to shreveport - a journey that for the first time found me alone and in a new place. Hours would go by if I began to tell you stories of the exciting things that have happened and about all the people I have met.
But, it's not home.
For 23 years I've been wanting to get out of Texarkana. "There's nothing to do," "I just want to get away," and "I want to make new friends," were all things you might have heard me said about Texarkana. My heart was so tired of the same things everyday - same places, same faces.
Now, I miss Texarkana. Why? Because it's my home. Words can't explain it. You can't comprehend it. That's just the way it is.
Home. If you say that word enough, it sounds really odd. Is home a house? Is your house your home? Or is it a town? A country? Earth? What exactly is home?
In the book of Philippians Paul talks about our homes. In chapter 3, verse 19, Paul talks about some people living for earthly things. I think what Paul is trying to say in verse 19 is, "these people are making EARTH their home - they are enjoying the sins the earth has to offer."
Philippians 3:20 says this; "But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior."
So, we live on earth, but this isn't REALLY our home. We should live like we are citizens of heaven. Changes things, doesn't it?
If you are a citizen of heaven, would you be full of joy? Yes! If you were a citizen of heaven, would you be full of love? Of course! If you were a citizen of heaven, would you allow stress and worry to invade your heart? No way! In Heaven, we won't worry! We won't stress! Unimaginable love, unfathomable joy and peace, unspeakable bliss and beauty.
Citizens of heaven have no worries. Only love, joy, peace, and excitement.
My home is not Shreveport or Texarkana. Your home is not here, your home is heaven.
When I get to heaven, I suspect I'll say something like, "so THIS is what home feels like..."
Driving back into Texarkana, everything I see brings me happiness; the roads, the stores, restraunts, malls, my family.
Can you imagine the emotion we'll all feel when we "drive" into heaven?
I can't wait to go home.
