God Has Called Us

WE have to lay hold of God’s call for us so that we can fulfill His purpose for our life. Think, for a moment, how awesome it is that God, our Creator, has called us. He has not abandoned us despite the fall of mankind and the evil which is being perpetrated by the prince of this fallen world.
Let’s recapitulate the call of God in Christ Jesus afresh as follows:
1. It’s a Holy Calling
In 2 Timothy 1:9, 10 (NKJV) we read that God “who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,”
God is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. He alone has all knowledge; His knowledge is complete and perfect; He knows what was, and is, and is to come. Even before time began, God has called us with a holy calling. It’s a sacred calling from Almighty God Himself, whom Job declares, “I know that You can do everything, and that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You” (Job 42:2 NKJV).
It’s a divine call which God has initiated so that His purpose may be fulfilled through us, who have received His gift of Salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. God has done it all for us; we did not work for this holy calling. Our part is to respond to the call.
Paul (ex-Pharisee, believer and tentmaker) states that God’s call or appointment for him was to be “a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles” (2 Tim. 1:11 NKJV). In turn, he gives the following charge to Timothy, “You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also; Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching” (2 Tim. 2:1, 2; & 2:2 NKJV).
Like Paul, we have to hearken to the Lord’s call and get moving to live out His call for us so as to be the person He wants us to be and do what He tells us to do. Let’s continually present our bodies as a living sacrifice, catch the fire of God’s holy call, and trim the wick of our oil lamps to keep the fire of God aflame in us.
2. It’s a High Calling
“I press toward the goal to win the [supreme and heavenly] prize to which God in Christ Jesus is calling us upward” (Phil. 3:14 Amp.).
Paul is ever pressing onward from glory to glory; he works hard on his holy calling so that he may grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ Jesus. He wants to move beyond the Holy Place into the Holy of Holies. Amongst other things, he exhorts us to follow his example to be: a good soldier of Jesus Christ who is able to endure hardship; an athlete who competes according to the rules; a hard-working farmer; and a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Thus says Paul, “Not that I have now attained [this ideal], or have already been made perfect, but I press on to lay hold of (grasp) and make my own, that for which Christ Jesus (the Messiah) has laid hold of me and made me His own. I do not consider, brethren, that I have captured and made it my own [yet]; but one thing I do [it is my one aspiration]: forgetting those things which are behind and straining forward to what lies ahead” (Phil.3:12, 13 Amp.).
We are meant to soar with wings like eagles and ascend God’s holy mountain to His house of prayer for all nations. Let’s be diligent in our spiritual walk and work out the fullness of our high calling in Christ Jesus.
3. It’s a Heavenly Calling
“But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you” (1 Pet. 5:10 NKJV).
Jesus is calling us to live with Him in heaven forevermore. He has said, “In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:2,3 NKJV). Truly, we can be in the presence of God because of our Lord Jesus Christ who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
“Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in His house” (Heb. 3:1, 2 NKJV). Likewise, we are to be faithful to our call.
We will by our faith in Christ overcome the tribulation of this world, and we are the most blessed of all the people in the world in that we have Hope of future glory. “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs – heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together” (Romans 8:16, 17 NKJV).
Therefore, let’s arise to God’s call and let Him build us up to fulfill the fullness of His call unto us as individuals and a body of believers. Through it all God will be faithful to us even if we are faithless. “This is a faithful saying; For if we died with Him, we shall also live with Him. If we endure, we shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us. If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself” (2 Tim. 2:11 – 13 NKJV).
The Lord stood with Paul to see to it that His purpose through him is fulfilled to the end. He will also stand with us as we stand up for JESUS. “But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that the message might be preached fully through me, and that all the Gentiles might hear. And I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom. To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen!” (2 Tim. 17, 18 NKJV).
