WRITING is, by and large, solitary work which can only be accomplished after a time of study, rumination, and pounding out our understanding and appreciation of the subject matter at hand. It calls for discipline and diligence. As writers who share the word of God, we have an advantage in that the love of Christ compels us, coupled with the assurance that He will never leave us nor forsake us; being very present through the Holy Spirit.
Elijah was called to be a prophet of God. After his epoch-execution of the prophets of Baal at Mount Carmel, he was intimidated by Jezebel’s threat and fled for his life. During his escapade, Elijah went a day’s journey into the wilderness and prayed that he might die. He was physically exhausted. An angel of the Lord provided him with a cake and a jar of water, “and he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb, the mountain of God” (1 Kings 19:8 NKJV). The Lord revealed Himself as He passed by Elijah on the mountain and spoke in a still small voice. God asked him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?” (1 Kings 19:13b NKJV).
As writers we may face discouragement or difficulty from time to time. In particular, we may feel drained out after completing a considerable piece of writing, say, a book or a sermon and find ourselves attacked in our mind by all kinds of self-doubt and unfounded fears. (You must have done something good for the kingdom of darkness to take notice.) What do we do? Do we flee and hide from our call?
A retreat would be in order so that we can recover our physical strength. During such a time we can rest and let God speak to us afresh in His still small voice. “The Lord will give strength to His people; The Lord will bless His people with peace” (Psalm 29:11 NKJV). “Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10 NKJV). As we receive fresh direction, we move and press on with the Lord.
Elijah told the Lord that: “I have been very zealous for the Lord God of hosts; …I alone am left; and they seek to take my life” (1 Kings 19:14 NKJV). In reply, God instructed him to anoint Hazael as king over Syria, Nimshi as king of Israel and Elisha as a prophet in his place. Moreover, God said, “Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him” (1 Kings 19:18 NKJV).
Some times we may feel that we are all alone and nobody around us seems to understand us. Not even fellow believers; because we are a peculiar type of believers who can’t help it, but write! Words keep flowing out from our inner man, seeking for print-form. And, we grow in consciousness of every jot and tittle. Verily, Jesus has given us many brothers and sisters and grandmothers (yes, some of you reading, I know, are literally grandmothers) who do the will of God, and many of them who are just like us can be found right here in FaithWriters.com.
Paul, the apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, did not lead an easy life to fulfill his call to preach the gospel to the Gentiles. In serving the Lord, Paul faced all kinds of perils and hardship. He fought the good fight of faith with the courage of a soldier, sowed God’s word extensively with the dedication of a farmer, and reigned over his flesh with the discipline of a prize-bound athlete. As for his writings, by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, they have been a tremendous blessing unto the Body of Christ. Thank God for writers of both the Old and New Testaments!
Jesus Christ forsook all of heaven so as to redeem us from the curse of sin through His death, burial and resurrection. He went to the cross even though all His followers forsook Him when He was arrested at Gethsemane. He fulfilled God’s will for salvation to be made possible unto all who repent, call upon His name, and be baptised. As written in John 21:25 NKJV: “And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that could be written. Amen.”
The splendour and glory of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit cannot be contained. We can only write what has been revealed to us in the Scriptures and by the Holy Spirit. Our call as writers is to be faithful to write what we know and tell the world that JESUS lives! Indeed, believers are blessed to be partakers of the mysteries of the kingdom of God. “And He said, “To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is given in parables, that ‘Seeing they may not see, And hearing they may not understand’” ”(Luke 7:10 NKJV).
“It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, But the glory of kings is to search out a matter” (Proverbs 25:2 NKJV). We are the ones who “..reign as king in life through the one Man Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One)” (Romans 5:17b Amp.). Let’s seek Jesus our Intercessor and God-Man in heaven for more of His revelation through the Holy Spirit, while remaining faithful to our call. We need fresh manna from heaven every day; milk, bread and solid food.
Incidentally, Jesus said that His food “is to do the will of the Father and to finish His work”(John 4:34 NKJV). It’s a kingdom-mystery for us to experience that when we are actively engaged in our writing, we receive God’s grace of supernatural strength and satisfaction to plod on and complete the writing even if it means skipping our regular meal time or delaying our sleeping time, for that matter.
Never belittle what God has impressed upon our heart to write. Do not despise the days of small beginning. We got to start somewhere and keep going. From what I recalled, “The Prayer of Jabez” was already written many years ago before it was discovered and became a bestseller, blessing many souls in the process. Who knows, your particular piece of writing may be of crucial help to another person. The light of Christ which is in us, as a light upon a hill, ought not to be kept hidden.
With such a great company of writers before us and with us, and such splendour and awesome works of God our Creator to write on, we shall never write alone nor run out of words. Keep writing, live it up for JESUS, and go tell the world that JESUS lives!
