We know that sin has alluring powers. It entices us to get one foot in the door. As time passes the door opens a little wider; our foot slides farther inside. We often think, "This seems harmless enough; it won't hurt to do this or say that." Before we realize it, we accept worse things as not being so bad. We step farther inside. Once we venture both feet inside, the door slams shut and locks behind us. There we stand, entrapped by sin.
For you see, we have no key. The evil power that lured us to sin's door doesn't want us to escape. Now we begin to understand that sin isn't attractive as we first thought; in reality it is very deceitful.
We are miserable, wanting nothing but to get out, but how? Sin has captured us by our own weakness.
After much guilt, usually with some physical suffering and great spiritual damage, we begin to realize we made a terrible mistake. We just want out. We want to go home.
Where is home? Home is fellowship with God. We begin to pray, "Lord, we are sorry we ever put our foot in sin's open door. Have mercy on us. We want out but can't do it alone."
It is then our Father's supreme love for us emerges: the Holy Spirit reminds our spirit that we are still His children. As in the case of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32) our heavenly Father desires us to return home.
By the Holy Spirit working within our spirit, the door starts to open. We place one foot through the doorway, then the other. This time we walk into the light of forgivness, truth, and love. We have made it back home.
The next time we see sin's door ajar, let us recall the past agony we suffered and seek God's way of resistance to the foe (Eph.6:11.) His way will keep us away from sin's door, wearing a victory smile on our face.
Prayer: Lord, may we always turn to You in prayer first, mindful that we are drawn toward the temptation to sin because of our own lust and that You know how to deliver us with a way of escape. May we constantly acknowledge Your way and act accordingly. Amen
