What did you do last Sunday? How about the Sunday before? Matter of fact, what do you normally find yourself doing on any given Sunday? Maybe you use it as a day to catch up on housework. Maybe you even go to work on Sunday.
In Mark chapter two, Jesus was criticized by the Pharisees for picking grain from a field on the Sabbath. But Jesus, as always, had a ready rebuke for them. King David, He reminded them, once entered the house of God on the Sabbath to retrieve showbread not only for him but also for those accompanying him. “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.” (Mark 2:27-28 NKJV)
Examining this verse and others related to it illuminate the notion that the purpose of the Sabbath is twofold. God instituted it for our own benefit so that we would have an entire day of rest, after six days of work. In this day and age – and particularly our American culture – it is all too easy to become overworked and “burned out,” which can be the cause of many physical as well as emotional and mental problems.
The second purpose of the Sabbath is to set aside a day not only for our own rest, but to focus our attention on what should be our only object of worship: God Himself. It is difficult to separate these two reasonings from each other when examining the purpose of the Sabbath, for if we are going to faithfully treat the Sabbath as a holy day of observance to the Lord, it is virtually impossible to be about our “usual,” six-day-a-week business. We must set aside those things that so easily distract us in order to attend to our means of worship. Doing this on a regular basis also helps ensure a balance between work and rest, and worldly things do not become graven images.
