I saw the Teacher and started to walk toward him because I had a very important question to ask him. By today's standards, I was doing pretty well for myself by owning much property and a lot of other wealth. Even though I had more riches than I could ever hope for, I still wanted one more thing. I ran up to the Teacher and asked " good teacher, what must I do to get eternal life".

I wasn't sure what the Teacher would say but I was totally unprepared for the answer he gave me. The Teacher said " why do you call me good, no one is good only God". Then the Teacher said " you know the commandments don't murder, don't commit adultery, don't steal, don't lie, don't cheat and honor your mother and father".I was stunned by the Teacher's words but thought to myself that I could still get the answer that I wanted.

I said to the Teacher " Teacher, I have from my youth kept them all". I figured by using this answer I can get the answer I was looking for. The Teacher looked me right in the eye with a smile on his face. The Teacher said " there is one thing left, go and sell whatever you own and give it to the poor". The Teacher continued " all your wealth will then be heavenly wealth and come follow me".

I could not believe what the Teacher just told me. It's taken me a long time to acquire the wealth and I'm not going to give it up just like that. I decided the answer I wanted was not worth the cost of losing everything I had. I walked away from the Teacher shaking my head and saying to myself that it is not worth the risk.
