Are you tired of reading the stories of God's supernatural power or hearing the
stories of the old times in the church? Instead of reading about them, why aren't
we seeing them in our church and our lives today?
The way to open ourselves and our churches for this is to recognize that the
power of God can not and will not be controlled by man. There are many who
want to tightly control people or market their abilities. The glory of God will only
come when we totally relinquish control to Him.
So why do we try to control what God does? Fear. Fear of the unknown. We
have everything pegged into categories within our various denominations and
traditions. As long as we are comfortable with what God is doing we are able to
control it. God will not be controlled. God's power and the function of the Holy
Ghost (or Holy Spirit) is not magic. The source of God's power is His undying
love for us. Pure and simple. God has no hidden agendas like man does.
I realize in writing this that we risk going to extremes such as barking, laughing
and picking up snakes. I am not advocating any of these, just the contrary. The
function of the Holy Spirit is not a sideshow experience. It is a show of God's
presence. Do we want His presence or do we fear that we can't keep a control
of it and be out of church by noon? Again, our agendas get in the way of what
God really wants to do. We are so afraid to lose control that we snuff out
anything that makes us feel uncomfortable. If God were to appear to us in a
burning pulpit we would put it out!
Did you know that God WANTS to show His power in the same ways He did in
the Bible stories we read? God wants the church to be a place where there is
healing, deliverance and many other things. Can we handle such an outpouring
of His Spirit or are we content with a few praise and worship choruses, a sermon
and an emotional prayer at the end? No! I'm not satisfied with that. You
shouldn't be either. You might think: "Well, you're just talking weird. We don't
need any of that emotional stuff going on." That's right. We don't need the
emotional high, we need the power from on high! Many of us have played this
"church game" and know all the cliches'. That's exactly why people leave the
church the same way as they came. That's why when we pray for the sick that
they aren't healed.
It's really funny. We pray for God's will but we still want to control the outcome.
Satan uses us like a remote control. He is succeeding in controlling the Spirit
through us because we fear of losing control. He doesn't want us to experience
the true power of God. There's more for us through God but we will never see it
if we continue to be control freaks where the Spirit of God is concerned.
This is not our program. It's not supposed to be anyway. One of the things that
God wants us to do is to be still (Psalms 46:10). Being still bothers us. We are
uncomfortable with silence. How can God speak to us when we are doing all the
talking? Don't be afraid to sit still before the Lord. In your prayer time or in your
pew, allow the presence of God time to settle upon you. Time spent with God
will not be wasted. Pry the spiritual remote control from your grip and let the
Spirit of God be revealed in your life. It doesn't matter where you are. Train your
mind and spirit to listen to God. He will speak. Give Him your undivided
