“For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.” (2 Chronicles 16:9a)
“For God so loved the world that He gave …” (John 3:16) Salvation has been freely given to us, but it is not cheap. It costs something to God. “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
Once saved, following Jesus, the Son of God, is not a free-ride. It would cost us something. There is a price to be paid. Matthew 16:24, 25 record for us that: Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.” In other words, we are to pursue God’s will so that His purpose for our life can be fulfilled. It’s a wake-up call to stay mindful of the “things of God” cited by the Lord in Matthew 16:23.
The Spirit of God reveals the things of God to us. (1 Corinthians 2:12) When we receive His word by revelation, we can move boldly and confidently to do His will, and find ourselves loving God more than all others, including our loved ones. It’s the highest love which we ascribe to Him. As Jesus said in Luke 8:21b, “My mother and My brother are these who hear the word of God and do it.”
We have to walk circumspectly. In 1 Chronicles 21 when King David was moved by Satan to take a census of Israel, he sinned against God. As a result, God sent a plague upon Israel, and only restrained it by the threshing floor of Ornan. The angel of the Lord, through Gad, David’s seer, told David to erect an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Ornan. Ornan offered his threshing floor as well as oxen, wood, and wheat to David for free. 1 Chronicles 21:24 records: Then David said to Ornan, “No, but I will surely buy it for the full price, for I will not take what is yours for the Lord, nor offer burnt offerings with that which costs me nothing.”
In 2 Chronicles 14, King Asa with a combined army of 580,000 from Judah and Benjamin had to contend with the Ethiopian army of 1,000,000 men and 300 chariots. “And Asa cried out to the Lord his God, and said, “Lord, it is nothing for You to help, whether with many or with those who have no power; help us, O Lord our God, for we rest on You, and in Your name we go against this multitude. O Lord, Your are our God; do not let man prevail against You!” (2 Chronicles 14:11) God struck the Ethiopians and gave Asa the victory.
By the Spirit of God, Azariah said in 2 Chronicles 15: 2, “Hear me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin. The Lord is with you while you are with Him. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you.” As it turned out, in the thirty-sixth year of his reign, Asa made a treaty with the king of Syria, to stave off the king of Israel. Then Hanani the seer brought the word of God to Asa in 2 Chronicles 16:9, “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him. In this you have done foolishly; therefore from now on you shall have wars.”
King Jehoshaphat who succeeded Asa, his father, sought the Lord and proclaimed a fast when the inhabitants of Moab, Ammon and Mount Seir came against Judah. The Spirit of God by Jahaziel assured Jehoshaphat : Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s. (2 Chronicles 20:15) “Now when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated.” (2 Chronicles 20:22)
God will never fail us when we stay loyal to Him. As Jehoshaphat told his people on the day of battle, “Hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem: Believe in the Lord your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper.” (2 Chronicles 20:20b)
Hear then the word of God from 1 Corinthians 2:9,10:
But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him." But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God."

These passages from 2 Chronicles have captivated me during my reading today.
Dr. Charles Stanley’s “The Battle of Faith (2 Chronicles 20:1-18)” online devotion dated 24 June 2005 encouraged me further on the timeliness of God’s word. Hallelujah!
