“I Want a Big Much!” (April 30, 2005)

I remember sitting at the dinner table with my mom, dad, and little brother. Sometimes his three- year- old vocabulary just did not have enough words to say what he really meant. He was entertaining at best when he could barely speak but could belt out the jingle to the Oreo Cookie commercial ("You gotta have it!") or run down the hall, half naked shouting “Don’t leave without me!” before we left for an outing.

But the one I remember the most was his answer to the question,

“How much do you want?” “Matthew, how much ice cream do you want?” “Ishee, I want a big much!”

“Matthew, how much mashed potatoes do you want?” “Mommy, I want a big much, give me a big much!”

It became THE catch phrase in our house (next to “you gotta have it”). Years later whenever one of us dares to go back to our childhood long enough to remember something happy, it’s always “I want a big much” that reminds us of simpler times.

I’m sure as a grown up it’s used less frequently today. Somehow I just don’t see this conversation happening:

“Soldier, how much dehydrated peas and imitation pork chops do you want on your plate?” “Sir, I want a big much, Sir!”

Not likely. I would, however like to see it uttered more often around here.

“Sherry, how much of the Holy Spirit would you like today?” “I want a big much, Jesus”.

“Sherry, how much love and forgiveness can I offer you?” “Oh, Lord, give me a big much!”

You would think that being in this family as long as it has would cause me to carry it everywhere and use it for any occasion.

“I want a big much of God’s knowledge, wisdom, and power”. “I want a big much of his spiritual gifts.” At the very least, “I want a big much of that white chocolate cheesecake.”

(If they don’t have any in heaven, then I’m not going). Unfortunately it’s only when my mother comes over and she uses it herself that I’m reminded of it’s sentimental value and for a short time, it’s popular again in my home.

So don’t be surprised if you’re sitting in church one day and the Holy Spirit taps you on the shoulder asking, “How much fire would you like right now?” and you find yourself saying, “I want a BIG MUCH!” Just don’t say I didn’t warn you. It’s kind of contagious.
