Stewardship
“But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through and steal: for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6:20,21)
We can learn from the ants which gather their food in the harvest. So, we become diligent and store up riches on this earth so that, in our human wisdom, we can be well provided for. Our Lord Jesus Christ tells us the Parable of the Rich Fool, who had such an abundant harvest that he thought of building greater barns. Alas, in the pursuit of earthly riches for himself, he loses his soul because he has not set his love upon God to serve Him with his fruits and goods. “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matthew 16:26)
When we have surplus cash on-hand, we can deposit it into a bank account and derive interest income from it. Our deposit would be denominated in a currency such as USD, GBP and EURO. The more we deposit, the more we will have in our account, and the higher will be our interest income based on the same or higher prevailing interest rate. Our propensity to save and the interest rate given by the bank will determine the size of our account. But, we are not to stop at having an earthly account for our treasures on earth will pass away some day and we will never ever be able to bring any of it with us to heaven.
We are called to lay up treasures in heaven where the devourer cannot taint, erode or steal. Jesus entreats us to a make deposits into a heavenly account with Him. God has no need for our money; the earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, and He owns the cattle of a thousand hills. The word of God which comes to us in Malachi 3:10 reads: “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the window of heavens, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” God can never rob us of anything because He owns everything! But, we can rob Him in our tithes and offering.
The poor widow gave her two mites and Jesus commended her highly. FAITH is the currency of heaven. We are to take God at His word, sow our God-given seeds (money) into his kingdom (church, mission, etc.) by faith (love and obedience). The more we act in faith (which pleases God and honour Him) in our walk with the Lord in all areas of our life including our giving alms, praying, fasting and personal finance, the greater will be our faith deposit in heaven. As recorded for us in 1 Peter 1:7, “That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perisheth, though it be tired with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.”
God is very concerned with the way we handle our money. Jesus said in Matthew 6:24 that we cannot serve God and mammon. He went on to remind us in verse 30 to have more faith in Him (His goodness, faithfulness and provision): “Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?” So, as we grow in faith, we needn’t baulk any longer when we become not just a regular tither but an up-sized steward – someone who is ready to ask God, “What would You have me give today, Lord?” God is no man’s robber. “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”(Matthew 6:33)
How big is our heavenly account? How much time, resources and percentage of our God-given wealth do we expend by faith on the purposes of God? Let’s build up our heavenly account today in all areas of our life including personal finance, and be blessed. To whom much is given, much is expected. To whom much is gained, much more will be given.
