“In old age they still produce fruit; they are always green and full of sap.” Psalm 92:14 (NRSV)
In our youth, when we are active and full of good health, we zealously carry out good deeds and benevolent actions as our Lord leads. However, in older years as our body slows down, this is often not the case. Yet despite age and the onset of ill health, we can still maintain good deeds.
If we can do nothing else as we grow older, we can seek the goodness of God in prayer, asking Him to water the dry places of our life and other's lives. This is by no means unproductive or selfish living. Nor is it wasteful living, as some may see it, but this is a great work, great responsibility and great honour.
It is regretful that we compare our efforts with others. In youth there is boundless energy and many followers of Christ achieve much. In our older years we can pray, and not allow guilt or a sense of uselessness rob us of the joy and privilege of this. Remember our prayers are as sweet incense rising Heavenward and bring delight to our Father (Psalm 141:2). Moreover, the prayers of a righteous person are powerful and effective (James 5:16). God hears and answers prayer.
We may be frail in body, but our mind can be strong for prayer! Let's rejoice for even in our old age, God has given us a good work to do and we can still be productive, flourishing and fruitful for Him (Psalm 92:14). We have a special role in His Kingdom work and have not been forgotten in our old age.
