The Church of the Twentieth Century has basically lost its identity. The Twenty-first Century has looked upon its predecessor as an aged relic that needed a changeover. There is an old saying that, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” The Church of the 1900s began as a growing, dynamic body of believers that not only accepted the Bible as the Word of God but lived and promoted its truths. Spiritual battles were waged and fought with such tenacity that defeat was not an option.
The Twenty-first Century Church is trying to redefine its purpose and mission. Striving to be more relevant in an “irreverent” society has caused the Church to seek man’s initiatives instead of the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Many of the problems in our churches today are the result of the shallowness of the Believers and their lack of Biblical discovery. The satisfaction with “milk and honey” has dwarfed the desire for the “meat” of the Word.
Jesus made a reference to the importance of building a house based on the depth of its foundation. A house that is just built on the “earth” (ground) will not be able to withstand the challenges of nature. On the other hand, if one digs deep into the ground he will find a rock base on which to build his house, and the fury of nature will not affect his house. (Luke 6:47, 49)
Too many Christians have failed to build their lives beyond the basics of their Faith. Instead of digging deeper into the Word, they are satisfied with foundational truths.
Believers need to learn to spend time digging into the Word of Truth. Thank God for the basics of the Faith, but there is so much more to learn and experience. Much of the Church in the 1900s was made of Christians desiring to learn. They were not content to stay where they were spiritually. Their eyes continued to search the depth of His riches. (Hebrews 6:1)
The Holy Spirit is the foreman of our “digging.” He “searches all things, yea the deep things of God,” (I Corinthians 2:10) and reveals them to the Believers! When the modern church turns to the depth of the Word, they will experience growth, both personal and corporate.
GO DEEPER, GROW STRONGER should be drilled into the army of Believers.
