Nicolaus Copernicus was an astronomer, who proposed a heliocentric system that the planets orbit around the Sun. Heliocentrism is the astronomical model in which the Earth and planets revolve around the Sun at the centre of the Universe. In order words, the Earth hangs upon nothing!
The publication of Copernicus’ model, in his book, De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres), just before his death in 1553, was a major event in the history of science, triggering the Copernican Revolution and making a pioneering contribution to the Scientific Revolution.
Going back in history, I wandered how Job discovered this around the 6th Century B.C. (He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing. Job 26:7). The thought of Job being able to understand this, without the microscope, telescope or horoscope, beats my imagination.
Sit back and enjoy the interview this writer conducted with the man from the land of Uz.
Stephen Adeagbo (S.A.): Can I meet you, sir?
Job: Well, I’m Job.
S.A.: Sir, … (Staring at him, I mumbled)
Job: Is there any other thing, besides?
S.A.: Sir, em, I mean to ask if there is more about you.
Job: If there’s any other thing you want to know about me, you will find it in the 18th book of the Bible. The book, containing 42 Chapters, centred on me. But of course, I’m always amazed whenever I see saints of your generation not taking their time to read and study. I wish you will create time to read the ageless, timeless and boundless Word. Did you get that?
S.A.: Very well, sir! Actually, I started reading my Bible in my first year as an undergraduate, but then, sir, I feel I should hear from the horses’ mouth. All the same, your admonition is well taken, sir.
Job: Alright!
S.A.: Sir, in the sixth verse of the 26th Chapter of your book, you spoke about the earth being hung upon nothing. Sir, how did you come about that without having access to a microscope, telescope or horoscope?
Job: Thank you very much. Actually, it was a difficult moment for me, owing to the excruciating pain I was going through by the hand of the devil. To make my situation worse, my wife encouraged me to curse God and die, while my friends wrongly accused me of being a sinner. What else could be worse than that? I was lonely, as it were; life was fast ebbing out. My entire real estate crumbled, my children were no more and my entire herd perished.
S.A.: Hmm! Akiika!
Job: Interestingly, I stood. Although my body was in serious pain, my spirit was not affected. This made me to have and to enjoy a constant connection and communication with my Creator!
S.A.: That sounds like 2 Corinthians 4:16; “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day” as we have it in the New International Version (NIV).
The same sense is uttered in the New Living Translation (NLT) as: “That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day”.
Job: Exactly! When I joined the saints triumphant, I discovered how impatient the saints militant could be. Your life is a script written by God Himself. Your highs and lows cannot catch Him unaware. Scary moments and delays abound on this path; some at the point of marriage, job or even while on campus.
S.A.: Campus? Were you aware of my extra oil in LAUTECH (Ladoke Akintola University of Technology)?
Job: (Chuckles!) You’re a smart and wise boy! Extra oil, indeed. “Bi onigba ba se pe igba e ni a baa npee,”( if the owner of a calabash calls it worthless, others will join him to pack rubbish). Let me tell you something that will surprise you. We saw you putting efforts together to pass a second semester core course, but with all that you did, you failed the course. We were actually watching that drama from heaven. You did all you could, but we permitted the failure.
S.A.: Ah ah! 'O dun mi fa!' (It was very painful!) Due to the failure, I couldn't be mobilised to serve my fatherland via the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as my mates did.
Job: Who told you they were your mates? The Lord chooses who your mates are, not you!
Don't you know that God cooks His own in His crucible? Even Christ Jesus, the Captain of our salvation, was made perfect through suffering! This is not about "Osho ile or Aje ode" (witches & wizards); those ones are ragamuffins, count them out!
If from Adam to John, in the book of Revelation, everyone has his or her own scar, the contemporary saints cannot be left out.
S.A.: With the way you have revealed an experience in my past, I bet you also know about the man I saw inside the bush, close to the 1200 Lecture Theater. Abi, sir?
Job: Very Well! At that period, Bro. Gbile Akanni was facilitating an academic conference in LAUTHECH, while you went to seek the LORD before the meeting commenced!
S.A.: Ah! You have the details?
Job: Why not? Don’t worry, one day you will be part of us, transiting from the streets of dust to that of gold. Then, you will understand better.
S.A.: The man told me 3 things that gave me direction in life. He said that…
Job: I’m aware! I saw the script. Don’t bother!
S.A.: Okay, sir.
Job: Tell the saints militant to be encouraged. Let them know that there warfare will soon be accomplished. Hold the fort, all tears will soon be wiped off!
S.A.: Noted, sir.
Job: After my transition to the church triumphant, I discovered that my story was similar to what happened to Jesus and the disciples on the stormy sea.
S. A.: That should be in Luke Chapter 8.
Job: Exactly! What Jesus told them in verse 22 was: “Let us go over unto the other side of the lake”.
S.A.: Yes, sir.
Job: Our pilgrimage is often fraught with perils, suspense, surprises, afflictions, highs and lows. Unfortunately, many keep jumping out from the midst of the boat. Now, do you think that He who told them to cross over unto the other side will abandon them in the midst of the stormy journey?
S.A.: Absolutely, no sir!
Job: You need to get the principle right. Each time the Master initiates a journey, do not allow whatever you encounter on the way to frighten you. Be rest assured that you'll arrive at the promised destination. Even if the mountains are tumbling and the hills are trembling, when the wind goes boisterous, they will always defer to the authority of He that created them all! Are you getting it?
S.A.: Well understood, sir. Sir, Mary Ann Baker's hymn is coming to my heart; am I permitted to sing?
Job: Why not?
S.A.: Thank you sir.
Master, the tempest is raging!
The billows are tossing high!
The sky is o'ershadowed with blackness,
No shelter or help is nigh;
Carest thou not that we perish?"
How canst thou lie asleep,
When each moment so madly is threat'ning
A grave in the angry deep?
Refrain:
The winds and the waves shall obey thy will.
"Peace, be still!"
Whether the wrath of the storm-tossed sea,
Or struggles or evil, whatever it be,
No water can swallow the ship where lies
The Master of ocean and earth and skies:
They all shall sweetly obey thy will.
"Peace, be still! Peace, be still!"
They all shall sweetly obey thy will.
(Job patted S.A. on his back and said: "That summarises the whole story." Tell the saints not to neglect singing hymns and spiritual songs along with the scripture.
S.A.: I will do that sir!
Job: Let me take you back to your initial question on how I discovered the earth hung on nothing. Sincerely, I’ll say it was more of a revelation than of a discovery. I couldn’t have discovered it, if the LORD did not reveal it.
Though this took scientists several years to ‘discover’, to the man in tune with God, the Creator of the universe, mysteries cannot stay mysterious. The affliction affected my body, but my spirit was spared.
However, as much as you diligently guard your spirit, please, take good care of your body. Remember that if the body is down, the grace upon your spirit becomes useless!
S.A.: Hmm! Great and timely lessons. Thank you for your time, sir.
Job: You’re welcome.
