Euro 2020, which is the 16th EUFA European Championship, was billed to hold in 2020, but it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, the quadrennial men’s football championship of Europe kicked off on Saturday June 11, 2021.
During the Group B opener, between Denmark and Finland, an ugly incident happened, which called for the suspension of the match.
Christian Eriksen, the captain of the Danish side, suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the pitch. While the medics ran to his attention, his fear-gripped teammates surrounded him in solidarity.
But then, such an occurrence is not new in the history of the round-leather game.
Payers like Farice Muamba of Bolton Wanderers and Bafetimbi Gomis, a French striker, among others, had suffered a similar incident.
Suffice it to say that no incident is a mere coincidence; there are always lessons to learn, though.
Reacting to the incident, English defender, Tyrone Mings, said,
“No safer place for players than the pitch.”
That statement, for me, is a heavy one.
How can the same pitch that almost snuffed life out of Eriksen, as it were, remain the safest place for him?
Many times, life’s journey requires a die-hard spirit to traverse, setting of one’s eye like a flint and not being lily-livered.
I wonder where Kanu Nnwankwo would have ended, if he had decided to hang his boots after his open heart surgery in 1996.
Today, he is one of the most decorated footballers in Africa, creating opportunities for many to have free heart surgeries.
Why will you quit your pursuit, telling yourself you have reached the end of the tether? Have you forgotten what that man from the land of Uz said?
“Though He slay me, I will yet trust Him.” (Job 13:15)
Whether your ‘collapse’ is divinely orchestrated or tagged a human set-up, it is never an excuse for you to quit. The glory that lies ahead far outweighs this present predicament.
Men like Pliable, the companion of Christian in John Bunyan’s book, Pilgrims’ Progress, would have their fingers to bite eternally.
He and Christian had both embarked on a journey with a glorious destination in view, but because he couldn’t endure, he returned half way.
Now, let’s consider the flipside of this collapse.
The woman of Samaria in John, Chapter 4, had ‘collapsed’ five times into the hands of terrible men, who molested, dehumanised and dumped her.
However, getting into the hands of the one who knows how to resuscitate fainting hearts, nay, the Custodian of life, her story changed drastically – she, immediately, became a force to reckon with in the city that same day.
Who told you that because of your sexual escapades, it is finished with you?
The number of abortions you have committed, does not matter; there is a fountain ever flowing, it is the blood of Jesus. It is ever potent to cleanse and restore.
Are you now on your death bed, because you’ve overworked your visceral organs with your drinking spree or drug addiction?
Do not condemn yourself, for an offer of a life-support system is here. Although the sun is setting, it can still dry the much needed clothes.
Jesus’ arms are wide open, provided you are willing to open the door of your heart to Him.
There’s no safer place for men than in Jesus. Of course, Jesus is a PLACE – Peace, Life, All-Sufficient-One, Creator, Everlasting Father.
If Eriksen is set to get a defibrillator implant, then, you can be sure of getting a better offer from your Creator.
