“I pray for them to become one with us, so that the world will recognize that you sent me.” John 17:21 (The Passion)

The mark of Christian love is unity. Jesus implores that we may be united, even though we might have theological differences, or different ways that we live out our faith. If only we would love each other deeply. Love enough to look beyond our entrenched thinking and have healing dialogue consistent with the prayer of Jesus. Nothing, he said, would demonstrate unity better to the world than the love His people share together.

We can continue to regard each other with suspicion and judgement that further fractures God’s family or we can celebrate our differences and all the ways He unites us in love, despite those differences. This is how we become one.

In these past weeks I have become part of an online study group. Though the theological stance is different to my own, the Spirit has impressed me to stay and offer my own thoughts lovingly and graciously. In Christ, we can stay united, and allow His love to have its way. None of us are completely right, we are all on a journey, learning from each other and growing closer to each other and the heart of God as we do.

We must consciously seek to promote oneness. And that may mean humbly surrendering our own dogmas. Where is the Spirit of God prompting us to seek unity right now? What needs to be surrendered for this to happen?

‘Jesus, forgive me for when I cause division. Show me how to work together with others in your Church so that the world may see and know you.’
